The honor guest was presented a I gift from the hostess. GIRL MARRIED THURSDAY Mi s Helen G. Shady, daughter of M: and Mrs. John Shadv of Craigville and well known her* became the bride of John R. Whicker well known teacher of i ortland, at a wedding ceremony performed at the United Brethren parsonage at I Craigville at S o’clock Thursday morning. The single ring ceremony was .ead by the Rev. F. D. Pugh. After a two weeks’ tour in the east, Mr. and Mrs. Whicker will reside at their newly acquired home in Huntington. Mr. Whicker will teach in the Markle schools where he has been located the past three years. The Mission Band of the Reformed church will meet Saturday afternoon at three o’clock in the church parlors. All those who have not brought their gifts for b« treasure chest are asked to bring them to this meeting. M. E. LADIES AID HOLDS REGULAR MEETING i Foity-five members of the La- ■ dies Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal church attended the regular meeting of the organization which was held Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. John E. Nelson on South Fourth street. Mrs. Nelson was assisted as hostess by I Mrs. E. W. Johnson. The meeting was opened with I devotional services conducted by Mis. Charity Hooper, after which the regular routine of business was followed. Eighty sick and social calls made during the month were | reported. Following the business session, a social hour was enjoyed and a very unique contest was held. At the close of the afternoon. J Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Johnson prepared a delicious luncheon- which was served by the Misses Marjo: ie Johnson, Ruth Porter, and 1 Agnes and Doris Nelson. OCEAN FLIERS BEGIN FLIGHT German Aviators to Make Three Stops for Refueling Kirkwall, Scotland, Aug. I—(U.PJ —Wolfram Hirth and Oscar Weller, German aviators, began their three-stop trans-Atlantic flight to Chicago at 9:40 a. m. <3:40 a.m. EST.) today when they departed from Swanbister shore for Iceland. Before entering their plane, they told newspaper men they were confident of success. From Iceland, they expected to fly to Greenland, refuel, and continue on to Labrador, where the last supply of fuel will be taken aboard before the dash to Chicago. Voyt Striker, Berne, submitted to a major operation this morning at :he Adams County Memorial Hospital. o Rate Is Increased Washington, Aug 1 —(UP) —The interstate commerce commision today increased rates on livestock from Chicago to New York. New rates ot 53 cents per hundred pounds on livestock carried in double deck cars from New York to Chicago were prescribed by the commission. The present rate of 50.5 cents was established two years ago by- the commission and was a reduction of the former rate of 56.5 cents.
