CHINESE TAKE TO TOBACCO IN LARGE NUMBERS Missionaries Attacked But Cigarette Salesmen Go Unmolested P iping. July —(UP)— With trade in many lines paralyzed by civil wars and the drop in silver exchange, it has been emphatically demonstrated that the Chinese are [ universally liecoming confirmed to-• bacco smokers, along with a largol part of the rest of the world. During the latest month for which 1 figures are now available the larg- j e«t foreign tobacco company tn I China reports that sales r ached the | highest figure in history. The Chin-! ese prefer to have tobacco, even if; they must cut down on necessaries. I Coolies who exist on 20 cents gold I a day. and support a family on this amount, manage to buy occasions.! I cigarettes. The tobacco companies! manufacture cigarettes to suit the humblest purse in China, and Chinese merchants will sell single cigarettes. If every Chinese coolie can manage to buy one cigarette a day, the : total in this vast population be-, comes very large. Chinese women, too, ara fond of smoking, and contribute a healthy quota to the total consumption. Cigarettes have become universal in China witbin a generation or two Foreign tobacco companies send their men into the remotest interior, where only missionaries have penetrated, and these intrepid salesmen ' find an increasing market for their! wares. Oddly enough Chinese bandits dis-1 play a fondness for kidnapping mis-. sionaries, but seldom bother tobac-1 co salesmen. For bandits too are] smokers, and appreciate the men i who bring them tobacco. During the I past y ar. scores of missionaries i have been killed or kidnapped, but foreign tobacco salesmen, who tri-I v 1 constantly in the interior, have escaped.
