FORBIDDEN CITY I WILL BE OPENED AS BIG MUSEUM Rare Collections of Valuable Art Objects Will be Seen After Repairs New York. June 25. — (U.R) —Olin I). Wannamaker, general secretary in America of the Chinese Cultural Foundation, has announced that active work lias started in Peiping to put all of the enormous collections of historical and artistic treas-! tires of the Forbidden City, the palaces of the reigning house of China, on exhibition for use of modern observers ami students. Until just 19 years ago none hut ] members of the royal household, ministers of state and those singled >ut for special honor by the Imperial family was permitted to pass through the gateway entering its walls. Chinese emperors left one of the most wonderful museums in the world, according to Wannamaker. Greatest treasures of Chinese art were collected by the Emperors. Books,"paintings, priceless antiques and other ancient objects of art,' offered by the people as tribute to their Emperors during several dy-, nasties, found their- way from all. parts of the vast empire inside the walls of the Forbidden City, and into one or another of the palatial structures. The present object is to restore to the Chinese people the objects of art symbolic of the spirit of the ' Chinese as a race, and to make the j great museum the symbol of an-' cient China for the entire world. The library contains more than 1,200,000 volumes including the J special Imperial library of 36,000' volumes in manuscript; a special manuscript collection of 11,000! volumes; the Chinese encyclopedia] I of 5,000 volumes and rare books of | I the Sung, Yuan and Ming dynas- ! ties, from the tenth through the sixteenth centuries. , Historical records include prac-I tical accounts of the royal house-; hold of the emperor, private ac-! counts of the empror, records of instructions issued by the emper-' MS, edicts and memorials, budgets of tiie royal household, maps, porraits, seals and charters, the seals of solid gold or jade. The picture galleries have 8,000 paintings and specimens of calligraphy, dating from the Tsin dy-; nasty, 2265 A. D. Porcelain pieces I to the number of 6,000 represent •very famous kiln from the Sung io tlr? Ming dynasty. A rare collection of jade of great variety numbering about 100,00# pieces varying in size from several feet in height to a fraction of an inch ■ 1 in diameter. The Forbidden City during the last third of a century has fallen into a state of disrepair. The pres-i ent movement includes plans for; renovating the present buildings housing the treasures, and also erection of buildings to meet the requirements of a modern museum.' As far as possible the plan of the Forbidden City will be left unmodified. Visitors will be able to see how the emperors lived, but palaces in other sections of the city will be turned more complete--y into general museums and art I galleries.
