ADAMS COim RAISES TREES Indianapolis, May 31 —Indiana's permanent forestry production is assured if counties continue their policy for the past year in setting aside timber and waste lands for more intensive raising of trees, according to a.report made public today by Richard Lieber, State Department of Conservation Director,. As a result of intensive educational and demonstrative work of the forestry division, the public is awake to the dire need of converting idle waste lands into productive and profitable areas, and set a remarkable pace at this economic betterment, Director Lieber says, as he points out that this year 94 land owners classified 5,680 acres to forests.
The report carries specific citation of the consistent progress made in Adams county where 4 owners classified 67.30 acres since 1921. An Act of the Legislature in 1921 encourages protection of forest lands from fire and grazing and the 1 development thereon of valuable timber stands. Either native woodland < or waste fields which will be planted to timber trees of three (3) acres or more may receive a re- ' ditced assessment for taxation purposes to one dollar per acre, Director Lieber points out. With a local rate of |3 oh the SIOO, the tax on such classified forests would only be three cents an acre each year. I Country estates ajul real estate lands are not eligible under this | law which classifies only fore?! producing lands. in the open agricultural counties' this feature of the forestry program ' is every Important, for the forests' have linen reduced far below the desired acerage, according to R. F ; Wilcox, state forester. T'nis law per- J mits farmers to secure decreased! j taxation to offset the uncertain pas-1 ture returns in their grazed fores’s i until such time they can be restored i to the dense healthy forests they] diotiki be. ‘Grazing is doing more to rob Indiana of its few remaining woodio*s than noth axe and saw," says Wik-ox. Grazing opens the stands by destroying the natural reproduction of young trees. The sun dries lout the soil and mature trees in a )>a tttred woods become dead in tae! Wild life; birds to destroy insects; flood control, recreation, beauty and local woods supplies so rheat fuel are all involved in this reforestation work as well as the reclamation of nonproductive lands. Records in the conservation department olfices show that 42,684 acres have been classified to forests since passage of the forestry law in 1921. — «—, o Stunt Thrills Japan Tokyo, —.UPl—Japanese aviation) circles cie thrilled recently at Yokaichi.
