GREAT BRITISH FISHING FLEET POINTS SEAWARD North Sea Expected to Give up Greatest Catch Since World War I.ewo'.toff. EiiKland, May 1, - (UP)- The vmigiutl of Great Britain’s fishing fleet of 13,000 vessel t sailed into the North Sea today to open what is expected to be the j inos. successful fishing season since •|ihe beginning of the World War. Modern steel drifter trawlers anil ! red-sailed drifters speed out t'or the 1 fishing grounds fro inthis historic fishing port while women anil childIren lined the quay and waved farewell. All along the English and Scottish coas s other fishermen pm out with their new nets in readiness tor the season's catch. The 1930 season will l.e marked by the attempt to discover new fisheries which will compensate for the hinning out of fish in the homo waters. In search of hitherto tin- ■ toudhed fishing grounds. British fishermen are expected to sail far 1 into the unexplored Arctic reaches. The staunch fishermen of Britain already ply their nets from Barents Sea to Morocco. For many years they have frequented the seas from Spitsbergen to Greenand as well as i along the entire west coast of Europe. • The zeal for discovery this year has been stimulated by the decision of the government to build an exploration ship at a cost of $400,000. When completed, the ship will explor the ocean Ixittoms in quest of new marine life and trace the ocean currents far into the north. The airplane also may be used tn the explorations, although it, hitherto has ptoved of little use in spotting fish because of the mudcolored waters in the fishing grounds. About 34,000 men are directly employed in fishing. The loss of life during a year owing’ to wrecks and ; founderings averages about 35. The remarkable catch of last year is mainly responsible for the optimistic feeling this season. Lowestoft alone has buildt 12 new driftertrawlers at a cost of $500,000. The vessels from this port begin herring fishing off the Irish coast and work their way from one migrating shoal to another past the Shetland Isles ; and the north-east coast until after a month of refitting in September they are ready for the great autumn season off the Northfolk coast. Lowestof exported 1,104.69,9 bar | rels of herring to the Baltic con-1 tries last summer and a further 687,000 during the autumn. Stockholm, — (UP)— A gian? spruce, more than 275 years old anti measuring 125 feet in height, has just been cut down’in Gasborn parish, in Verinland. At the root the ancient tree had a diameter of 44 inches. It was sawed into five sections. containing in all more than 118.43 cubic feet of solid wood and plenty of splinters for making pulp.
