Norton, representative in congress from New Jersey, says the new tariff bill will cause a panic among the women when they discover that one dollar felt hats will cost $1.95, three dollar felt hats will cost $5.54, handkerchiefs three cents more each and shoes will advance twenty per cent and thats only a part of the panic for the new bill boosts about every thing for every body at a time when increased cost ot living is not at all popular. A short delay in the building of the new engine house has followed the receiving of bids for same which totaled more than $25,000, considerably more than the council feels like spending for the improvement and more than they anticipated when the matter was inv stigated. Mr. Vance, chairman of the electric light committee states that his committee does not feel they can spare that amount of funds and at the same time continue the construction of rural lines as desired and Mr. Gillig, chairman of the finance committee feels that the expenditure should not exceed the original estimate of SIB,OOO. There is no discord among the council, every member of that / body and- the city officials being anxious to act economically and to the best interest of every tax payer in the city, which is of course the proper position. The en-' tire matter will be carefully worked out and the contract let in a short time. The largest single district for one census enumerator to cover is in Pecos county, Texas. Tlyee men who applied for the job gave it up. The fourth, a woman, has stuck. She is now out on horseback with a tent, cook stove and bedding prepared to camp out anywhere that night overtakes her in this vast, uninhabited region.
