NEW CARS ENTER 500-MILE RACE Indianapolis, Ind., April 29—Two new cars have been entered in the SM-mile automobile race at tlie Indianapolis Motoi Speddway. May 30. by James A. Talbot Jr.. Los Angeles, the most recent millionaire spor.sman to be lured by the whims of racing. But Talbot, unlike other wealthy men who have advanced, on the track will use the spectacular whirl cf the race as a laboratory for a i carmuretor he is subjecting to the! most in ensive test known to engin-eering-500 miles of gruelliqg duelling in an International fevent over' the brick and concrete track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Talbot, who has devoted his sport ing activities to power boat racing and aviation in the past, is making his debut tn speedway racing at the historic Indianapolis track, magnet for so many wealthy young men in the past. Talbot, however, al hough a sportsman of the highest order expects to get his excitement out of the performance of a carburetor rather than from the maelstrom of compe-; ion in the coming 500-mile drive. Two ears— Maw Specials will be pefwered with 151 cubic inches piston displacement four-cylinder motors —the type successfully used ; by Talbot in his campaign of racing on the. water, where his hydroplanes were sensationally successful. Il is the inventive leanings of a veteran driver. Al Melcher, tha' brings Talbot into a new sport. Melcher. living the dreams of all drivers, has perfected a carbarator that is an innovation and has attracted the'attention of the best egniueering minds. For years he has been tinkering with his pet plan. Only recently he perfected it to his satisfaction and now he is ready to give it the final test—so(( miles of punishment in a race car over the Indianapolis course. Talbot, intensely interested in mechanics as well as in sportsmanship lias sponsored tlie two cars. With only two carmurators per mltted on each car this year, according to the new specifications which Remand two man cars—driver ami tiding mechanic —and permit motors as large as 366 cubic inches piston displacement, carburation will play an important part in the race. So it is that Melcher—the veteran I driver who made his last ride here in 1927 when, at the wheel of a Miller Special, he was forced out as the race waned —is coming to the track this year as an engineer. It is the pa tern of the succemrul stories of severl former ra< e drivers who, through their race track engineering, have become wealthy. — « * Fruit Trees.
