DISEASE CAN 8E CONTROLLED The yellows disease of cabbage probably causes more loss of this common but delectable vegetable than other trouble. Many Indiana gardeners have written that they are no longer able to grow It. They say that the leaves turn yellow und full from th- plant. Such plants never produce a head and usmdly are killed, says Dr. ('. T. G ogory of the Purdue agricultural extension department. It is no use trying to treat the seed nor to add fertilizer. Mme or any other treatment to the soil to kill the disease. It L In the soil and will stay there for years and years. Ordinary and prac'icanl* soil treatment will do no good. '‘Serious as this disease is, it Is nevei theless easily controlled," says Gregory. "When you order your cabbage seed Insist on having one of the resistant varieties. Fo I arly vapP’ttes order Tacope, Wis cousin Globe, Marion Market or Al I Head Select. For midsummer oi I late vaiieties order Wisconsin Al. I Seasons. Wisconsin Brunswick,
| Wisconsin Succession, Indiana ('ale I huge, ami Wisconsin Hollander. A letter to the Purdue ngl'icilltiirtil experiment station will bring la list of those varieties with the h4ftr.es lif the seed companies handling them. Such seed costs more than the ordinary varieties lint it | will raise a erdp wher" ordinary ! varieties will d e. All cabbage seed should bo trout ed, Gregory says, and he tells how: Soak the seed for 30 minutes In a solution of corrosive sublimate. Huy the special Htiblimiite tablets from the drug store. One of these tablets in a pint of water maker the correct strength for this treatment. After r moving the seed wa ll It thoroughly and plant immediately op dry it and plant later. Phis treatment wll do no good against the yellows but II will con trol black leg and black rot, two it her serious diseases. — Q- —.- '~ - - — , «f tnc Mat 1 ranF jit Mnm*
