Spring is here, according to the calendar and actually its time for the merchant to present his claims to the customers. Time also for all of us to step out and make this ••• ■ the best year in history. It can be done. .The local campaign will begin warming up soon now with only about six weeks to go. Candidates are making clean campaigns and that's as it should be. Present your claims to the voters and let them decide who the standard . bearers shall be. W»| When Al Capone walked into headquarters in Chicago and asked what they wanted, no one seemed to be sure just what the fuss had all been about, so he calmly announced that he was there to look after the "big business" which is the superintending of beer running. Apparently that is not now tor ever has been a crime or a misdemeanor m Chicago. With call money down to one or two per cent in New York we wander why some smart fellows don't make a touch and then loan it out on similar terms for three times that. Low money, by the vay, is not a very good sign for it « ' denotes money idleness and that means things are not moving as they should. While the Commodores did not “Ifring home the bacon" from the Loyola gym in Chicago they returned with a record of having fought evfery minute, played the great game of basketball with courage and as the gentlemen they are and every one here will welcome them sincerely. Plenty of that dope ought to soon correct the burning thirst and perhaps thats the reason that the authorities are not trying very hard to keep it away from those who are willing to take a chance at any thing which contains a “kick." — ""■■■ 1 ■ ■ ~~ Edward Doheny is free at last and his trial closes the long fight over the admitted bribery of Albert B. Fall, secretary of the interior under President. Harding and while the seventy-fdur-year old multimillionaire oil magnate will not have to pay with a prison sentence for whatever his misdeeds were it is safe to predict that he will never again pack SIOO,OOO in a "little brown satchel” and offer it to a United States official, big or little. The naval parley and congress both appear to be trying to make “flop'’ records and in the meantime hundreds of thousands of men are out of employment, if things are to be fixed up in time for the congressional candidates to present their cla’ms to the voters, some one will have to step on the gas. Passing a tariff law that will make the burdens heavier will not help ♦ we fear. In the meantime it behoovfti every city to step fouward in every manner possible ami to make the best of a situation that doesn't seem to be every thing de--iied. Back after several weeks in the southland —in Miami, the Magic City—and well named. We enjoyed every moment, bathed in the Atlantic, attended ball games, golf tournaments, fished, visited the Everglades, Key West and other places of interest and found it all. just as advertised and better and more interesting if any thing. The city of Miami is yet in its teens anti boasts a population of 125.000 with hundreds of hotels, some of them the finest to be found any where in the land,'a center of fruit and vegetable business, with a liar 1 bor now attracting world wide attention and industries of varied kinds. It has a great future and except for hurricanes which have struck the community several times, would already be double the size it is. Florida is the world’s greatest playground and whatever you desire in the way of entertainment or pleasure may be found there during the winter season. Its future looks very bright indeed. But we are glad to “back homo again in Indiana" and at our desk hoping and looking for opportunities to be of service to the best community in the world. HECTIC YEAR ENDS IN LONDON STOCK MARKET ________ 1 Hatry Crash and Settlement go Down as Epochs In Exchange History By H. L. Percy i (United Press Staff Correspondent) Ixmdon, March 24 —(UP) — The massive doors of the Ixmdon stock exchange building swung slowly to as fonr o'clock chimed forth from city bells this afternoon. Top-hatted messengers and tired business men secured into the gathering twilight, glad that another day of the nerve-racking “bull and bear" business was over. Another day, but also another year, for when the stock exchange closed this afternoon, the financial year also ended. Seldom has there been a year so crammed with events for financial men. The Hatry crash, the Wall street crash, the rapid fluctuations in the bank rate, the general poor economic state of the country, to mention but a few, have all contributed to make it a year which will | go down memorably, in the history ! of the Stock exchange. The Hatry crash and its sequel the Hatry settlement were the outstanding events of the year. So extensive were the dealings of the I Hatry group, tliat when the crash I came, many speculators both small I and large, were threatened with ; huge losses, and in same cases, ruin. - It is said that only the prompt ac- ' tion of the stock exchange commit- , I tee of general purposes averted a , I panic. First of all the committee instantly suspended last September all I dealings ip the Hatry group of i shares and deferred settlement in | them first for a brief period and tben for a protracted period which extended until February. The committee then appointed an unoffic al committee of fonr prom < inent members of the “House," which devised a scheme whereby a fund or pool of about $5,000,000 was formed. From this fund all losses i were to be provided, and into it th l -1 various professional interests con-1 cerned paid money in fixed propor-; tions. The Hatry settlement, as is known, is unique in the history of the exchange. Not even in the pan- 1

les which followed the South Sea Babble rash ami tho Bevan frauds at the beginning of this century, was an official action taken to help those who went under. The effect of the \V all street crash on the Ixtndon stock exchange was, if anything beneficial. Anglo American stocks fell some-what as the American markets slithered down. Imt other stocks Improved and on the whole the English market did more business during that period than at any other time dining the year. The rapid succession of reduc tions in the Bank of England rate from 6’4 per cent last September tc 4H per cent this February, involving four changes was primarily designed to faeiltate trade. Each drop affected the stock exchange where, so soon as the annauneement, m the reduction was made known, government bonds and other Brit ssh stocks immediately hardened. Once again .this was a i>erlod of brisk activity on the market Tomorrow, with the opening of the new financial year, the prospective candidates put forward their applications for membership of the stock exchange, while retiring members date their resignations from the same time. At present thc-ra are apprexlms’e ly 4,000 members, but a paucity of bnsiness “on ’change" has occasioned a considerable decline in the number of uew entrants and a corresponding decline in the price for nomination.
