It won't be long now until we may expect some real weather. Another couple of weeks will bring us to March and while that usually is a little wild and wooly we often have some signs of spring. Don't overlook the Industrial Association banquet next Monday evening for tliats the time when a nunjber of very important matters will be taken up and you should have a voice in deciding them. We are promised now that a real accounting system will be installed in tlie highway department which annually spends as much as *'all the rest of the state government but has kept no actual check. . Seems as though its time for some I thing to lie done about it. In New York City just now there » is. a rage for offices over the .. seventy-fifth floor, that being con- , sidered more bon-ton than on the " lower floors. Most of these New . Yorkers need air and thats about the only way they can get it and stay close to Wall and Broad ' streets. Another week-end approaches with the most important thing for many fans, the basketball (’ontests, which at this period of the year become really exciting. After all its a great sport and so intense that most folks can forget all their troubles and cares by attending. r .... If TODAY’S CHUCKLE ♦ <U.R> ♦ Paris.--Mrs. Whitney Warren, wife of the American architect, is gathering all the documents relating to the Sires of Coucy whose beaut tlful chateau was destroyed by the Germans in 1917 and , hopes to establish a Coucy r museum at the Hotel de Ville hi the town of Coucy- i le-Chateau. j and the continuance of their plans > to place their Hues under ground ’ tn the city this year. Its a splen- ( did company well managed and al- ) ways improving so they can render ' better service to the public. The local Moose lodge is making a big drive for membership and , the results already obtained are so encouraging that the boys are en thusiastic over the outlook of building a membership of 1,000/ If they succeed they will need a new home and plan to build a handsome one that will not only be convenient and delightful in every way but a credit to the city. Its a fine spirit and the campaign deserves to succeed. No state organization should be permitted to handle twenty million dollars a year without a strict account of it and it would seem those doing it would be the most anxious to have every tiling so there can be no word of suspicion. We believe the men in charge of the state highway department have been honest but that isn't the question -—the money belongs to the taxpayers and they have a right to know just how it is spent. Indiana democratic editors and friends are enjoying a two days session at the Claypool hotel at Indianapolis, today and tomorrow, the occasion being the mid-winter meeting of tlie Indiana Democratic Editorial Association. The high spot will be the banquet tonight when Claude Bowerh, editor, author and orator, o( the New York Evening World will give the principal address. During today and Friday morning there will be numerous conferences, business sessions and organization meetings, all of much interest. During the course of a year thousands of automobiles are stolen in Indiana. Descriptions of the cars, with the license numbers, are given to the patrolmen and riding squads, and broadcast by the radio station. The records of the department show that most Os them are recovered. They were taken for joy riding or for use in a criminal act. No car owner, who has made it easy for his machine to be stolen, has ever been charged with being an accessory, but the law might be stretched. Nobody wishes to see such drastic action taken but crime could be discouraged if the owners of automobiles would make it as difficult as possible for them to be stolen. Practically all cars have tfuismtesion and door locks, thus providing a double check against thieves. If both of the locks were used it would prevent a great deal of the automobile stealing. — Indianapolis News. There are two sides to every .question. This is jVist as true in advertising as in an argument. In advertising there is the sidte of the advertiser and the side of the public. From the viewpoint of the advertiser in the newspaper, advertising Is amcans of increasing his volumne of business. Commercial development has made advertising as necessary to retail business as f " ' " " > Low Rate EXCURSIONS Every Sunday via • Nickel Plate Road r i Round Trip Fares From DECATUR , $2.75 TOLEDO Consult Ticket Agent
, customers. Without customers the advertiser could not remain in business, so he advertises to attract customers. The other side of the question is that of the public. To the public newspaper advertising means the bringing of the store show cases to the office and living room. It Is a service extended to the public by the advertiser, because it aids the customer in ascertaining where that which is wanted can be purchased at the most advantageous price. Newspaper advertising has abolished shopsearching. To save time for the shopper lengthens his day. So although there are two sides to newspaper advertising, there is no disagreement between the two. Finding that advertising serves th-? public as well as businbss the merchant has two reasons instead of one for advertising, and the customer learns that the most progressive merchants are the most extensive advertisers, so there is a
