CHURCH SEES > THIRD PARTY Believes Best Features of Each Party Should Be Urfed New York, Feb. 6—(U.R) A man who combines thn zeal of an idealist with the practical mind of a business man han outlined to the United Press his plans for taking the best features of both major; political parties and forging around them a new group to be known as j the Liberal party. In an interview before he left for his home In Pittsburgh. Samuel J Harden Church, president of the Carnegie Institute, elaborated hla! Ideas on why "religious dictation"! was menacing the government of the United States. Church sees the United States ■s “an humiliated nation" in which; 'he restorat on of political, religious and social freedom is vital if ‘he country Is to continue along he lines outlined for it by th?' framers of the constitution. “Remembers this idea of the for-, maticn of a Libera! party is only' 21 hours old,” Church said. “Nat-1 orally there are many details that emain to be worked out." Church made his suggestion for; the party at a dinner of the asso- 1 elation against the prohibition amendment Tuesday. At the dinner were such prom'nent men us William Cabtlf Bruce, former United States senator from Maryland; Struthers Burt, the author; Dr. Samuel A. Brown, Julian Codman of Boston, Frederick Coudert, Charles H. Sabin, and J. Medill Patterson. “It seems to me,” Church said, “that the two major parties are I virtually agreed on a number of mportant issues such as tariff, business and the promotion of world peace. It is my idea that the Liberal party should adopt I verything worthwhile that is al-j . eady in th? tenets of the present i party. Then our work will start. I We will work for the abolition n't i hypocrisy, fanaticism and cowarlice of which there is so much ' mong democrats and republicans. I In that sense it will be a clear, clean break away from the present •arty system. “Details, of course, remain to be! worked out. There is no doubt ; that when our work becomes more* organized we shall! place candidates in the field forj -ongress. We shall enter state ■lections as well as national ones/ or it is only by getting the right men in legislative bodies that pro-, tress is made.” Asked to name a man who would ypify the ideal Liberal candidate for president, Church declined. “It would be impossible now.” ho said. “Changing conditions might nake a man who is available now; ■unavailable at election time. How-; ever, I presume we will transact ‘ ’he necessary business of a polit- 1 ■ cal party along the lines now in use.” While Church is an opponent of prohibition, he does not inlend to make that the only issue in his fight. "The most dangerous of all the 1 trees which are today undermining the liberties of the American cople are the churches," he said. I mean these churches which lave established political groups to ■xercise their influence upon leg sat on at Washington and in all ! •ate capitals in the country." That situation, according to hurch, is “a national disgrace.” nd he hopes the Liberal party ■ ill derive its membership “from hpr.e myi ad millions of men and .omen in the two old parties who will no longer endure th ngs as hey are.” — 0 —— NOTES Mrs. Charles Pyle, Geneva was l.’itted to the Adams County Memorial hospital today and unerwent a tonsillectomy opeiatioa.
