Commodores Drop 28-26 Net Decision To St. Ros (
RAGGED PLAY IN FIRST HALF CAUSES DEFEAT Laurentmen Come Back Strong In Closing Minutes of Game Decatur Calh o 1 i c high school Commodores lost a basketball game here Saturday night to the fast going St. Rose netters of Lima, Ohio, 28-26. The game was interesting to spectators, but raggedly played. The Commodores missed many shots at the bosket and at times the St. Rose offense would tear the Commodore defense to shreds for close-in shots. Dining the latter part of the first ( half the Commodores played in spurts and went into the lead on ( several occasions only to return it to the St. Rose quintet. St. Rose played a peculiar brand of basketball, never taking a long shot and missing few if any of the shot" ones. The visitors had a clever method of pulling the Decatur defense out to the sides and running three men Into the center tinder the basket. The St. Rose plays were built around J. Blanchard, tall pivot mat:, who would leap through the defense for field goals when needed. St. Rose st :ged a final rally to lead at the hilt' 17-13, after Gass had kept the Commodores within | striking distance, by registering! thtee long-range shots. Carl Lose and Gerry Gage were | the mainstays of the Commodore' te . m during the Saturday game and j ' did a lot of clever passing. In tiie second period the i men came back strong, tying th? count and threatening to swamp ' their opponents. St. Rose never was I so far in the lead that the Compic- ' dores surrendered. The Lima netters were leading 28-20 witti about four minutes to play. The Laurentmen came to life and began bombarding the local not with all the desire to win, a team ever had. Petie Mylott stored a pair or counters and Carl Lose brought the Commodores to within two points of a tie with a beautiful 1 shot from center. Lima took time out with a half 1 minute to go. Decatur had possession of the ball and the Commodores tossed three times at thhoop, all falling short. Decatur has long been proud of its two high school net teams and the fans have done lots to help those teams — When athletic funds fall short —the fans are called on. In return Decaturs basketball citizenry asks for clean, fast ami good basketball with clean honest payers on the two teams. There ( is no place on either team for a player, no matter how good, who breaks training—and we believe that popular demand of the fans will l>e strong enough to remove any player from either the Commodore or Yellow Jacket team who fails to keep the faith. Tough luck Commodores —it was just one of those nights when the going was hard. Those who saw the Decatur-St. Rose game are convinced that the Laurentmen are the better player . but the old ball just wouldn’t stay put. The last minute rally for which the Commodores are famous, fell short by a single field goal. Ger. y Gage, Commodore for-1 ward, showed his metal when he en'ortuhatbly was knocked out on i had foul committed by a St. ' Rose player.
