[SUFFERING AND DEATH FOLLOW WAKE OF STORM ■ H’ONTINI’ED FKOM PAGE ONE) | funeral party continued to the eenwtery where Anderson was bur’ed and then Mrs. Anderson’s body was taken back to Baldwin in the same hearse. Twenty-two persons were injur ed in a gale and electrical storm at Oakdale, La. In other southern points considerable damage was done by high winds, presumable ihe fringes of the blizzard. In Chicago, with Lake Michigan three feet above norma! level I pounding at the southern shore line, business did not get under’ way until almost noon. Workers were unable to get to the loop until snowplows had broken a path for street cars, suburban trains and buses. Drifts, some eight and 10 feet deep, marooned the more hardy as they fared forth before dawn. Half of a snow shoveler’s body j was found along the Illniois Central suburban tracks. Other shoveleis sought the rest of the body as they moved drifts from switches. Practically all highways north, east, ami west of Indianapolis were blocked this morning. A. 11. Hinkle, maintenance superintendent of the highway department said. Extra crews laboring today were expected to clear the main highways by night. State road 52 was blocked by drifts between Thorntown and Lafayette. State road 29 was choked with drifts at the intersection with state road 32, near Lebanon. State road 34 was blockaded between Indianapolis and Crawfordsville, and west of Crawfordsville. State roads 36 and 43 were checked near Morton, in Putnam county. All highways in the northeast portion of the state, near Port Wayne, were impassable. The highway to Madison is clear. Hinkle said, and will he open for motorists wishing to attend the Friday dedication of the new bridge spanning the Ohio river at Madison.
Twenty-five telephone circuits were out Wednesday night, the majority of them in the northeastern portion of the state where the blizzard was at its greatest fury. | All of these had been repaired, and | communication throughout the state was satisfactory today, of- j ticials of the Indiana Belle Telephone company declared. Damage was not great. Springfield. 11!., reported 650 automobi’es stalled downstate, with highway police and farmers braving the blasts to go to the rescue of their occupants. The Wabash valley in Indiana rejoiced over the blizzard for they were confident that it had averted a serious Hood, threatening because of continued rains. The blizzard seemed to be subsiding in Wisconsin but the state was under a five inch blanket. Temperatures throughout the central forecast area were lowering slowly, probably not to stop before the zero mark is reached tonight or tomorrow. Throughout the storm area trains moved slowly and late if at all. Wire facilities still held up in mo t eases but lowering temperatures brought the forecast that communication wi 1 be crippled further before the blizzard has passed. United Press wires were work ing today but preparations were made to cast news in case any towns are marooned. —O~ I Man Is Electrocuted — Huntsville, Tex., Dee. 19. (U.R) Ben Aldridge, 24, died in the elec trie chair here today because of his criminal assault upon three Dallas high school g rls. ‘I hope 1 am the last man ever to be executed,” he said calmly I just before the current was switch ,ed on at 12:17 a. m. Aldridge's electrocution came less than a month af.e - that of I Lee Roy Merriman, convicted for I the same crime. Last minute efforts to prove Aldridge had become insane failed ! when Gov. Dan Moody and district ■ Judge Grover Adams of Dallas rej fused to interfere. 0
