6. E, CLUB PLAYS BERNE TONIGHT Two Independent hardwood rivals ,-ill clash «t 8: 15 o'clock tonight at pecatur high school gymnasium when the Berne A. C. aggregation meets pecatur General Electric club natters. The two teams met at Berne a few weeks ago and alter a hard battle De catur wai victorious by a few points. The game tonight should furnish plenty of basketball thrills for the fans High schol stars of former years will b. seen in action representing both teams. The G. E. Club lineup will pro bably be Bell and Hill at forwaid: Strickler at center and Mvlott ami Krick, guards. The Berne lineup will include several Berne stars and a cdunle of Fort Wayne netters. The Berne A. C. team ’o'- several years has been one o 2 the leading independent net teams of northeastern Indiana. Pat Hyland has been obtained to officiate at the game, Hyland ha- work-,-.l a good many games for the A. C’s and also for the local net teams. He believes the public wants to see a lit tie rougher brand of basketball when Independent teams clash than when high school teams meet and it is highly probable that the game will be it, < resting from start to finish. A preliminary game has been arranged and will start at 7:00 o'clock Carl Smith, manager of the G. £. Club stated today that his team would make an effort to continue Its good record and turn in a win tonight. Tickets can be obtained at the door for 25 cents or from any member of the General Electric club before game time. A program has been arranged for between halves of the big game, at which time an electric toaster will be presented to one of the spectators. o i DASKWWU i Tonight at 8:15 o'clock at Decatur high school gymnasium, the G. E. Club net team clashes for a second time this year with the Berne A. C. team. —oOo — Great crowds have been attending the G. E. club gam, this year, which is evidence that Decatur will support a good independent net aggregation. —oOo — Wednesday night Coach George Laurent's Catholic high school Commodores meet an old rival, St. Marys of Anderson on the Catholic high school hardwood. —oOo— Coach Laurent will in all probability use his two star utility men, Knute Holthouse and Carl Lose in place of Petie Mylott and and Bill Gass, both of whom are on the injured list. —oOo— No one however need think for a minute that the team will be weakened by the presence of Lose and Holthouse for both boys play creditable basketball and both are accural passers. —oOo — Friday night Herb Curtis will take his Yellow Jackets over to Winamac and Saturday night the Curtismen will stop off at the West Suburn, for oh, sort of a practice workout. —oOo — Os course the Bluffton Tiger, rather meek and harmless for the last several years on the hardwood, will growl its hardest at the Jacket m" but every time Herb thinks of l( ■ ■ ing the Tigers down in easy fashi he is reminded of the fact that a y a or so ago, some Bluffton net fan -all-! ed him up at 3:30 one morning and asked him who won the sectional, here—and it happened to be the year that Hartford trimmed Decatur in the first game. • —oOo— But that's only one of a million things which makes Decatur am Bluffton such rivals. If it was ju another basketball game, Decatui would win by 30 or 40 points but it is—the Jackets will have to play basketball every iqinute—because the West Suburbers always rise to tin occasion and give Decatur a real battle. —OOo— r Let's BEAT ANDERSON COM modores. —oOo— And let's EEAT WINAMAC and BLUFFTON, YELLOW JAC- ' KETS. —oOo —i Intra-mural basketball started a Decatur high school last night. Several interesting games were played Basketbfewls watched part of I' ll games and there were two little tel-

The date for the first tilt has not yet bene set. —oOo— And folks, right fresh from Buck's faithful typewriter, somewhat greyed the last few years from writing Tiger defeats, comes the following bits of slander: I Exhibit A. MUST BE TRUE According to our schedule booklet and outbursts from Dizzy Dick of Decatur, the Decatur Yellow Jackets come here Saturday night to get their annual grubbing at the hands of the Tigers. Perhaps we should say the Tigers’ Paws —but who knows? Exhibit B. ‘ SO GULLIBLE Dear Buckshot: They've got Dick Heller over at Decatur into believing that the Yellow’ Jackets are going to beat the Tigers Saturday night, if Dickie falls for this, he must believe in Santa Claus. Det your letter in early, Dick. SWEET ADELINE. —oOo — And these are just samples—Huck ran wild in his Monday column, telling all about what the Tigers would do. if they had a good basketball team. Os course Bluffton’s proud of having Decatur on its net schedule for its one of the high spots-Bluff-ton's class is usually out in township gymnasiums — where the Tigers win about a thir dos the games they play. The Monroe-Monroeville net game scheduled for Kirkland township gym nasium Friday night has been changed to Decatur high school gymnasium Saturday night. The change was announced today by Coach Piney Bryan of Monroe high school. o Indiana Netinen Plan For Opening Game Bloomington. Ind., Dec. 30—(UP)— Hoosier net men went through a hard workout last night in preparation for their opening season game at Bloomington next Saturday with DePauw. Practice was to continue every night this week, so that players may familiarize themselves with the court in the fieldhouse. DePauw plays Hose Poly Thursday night, and Hoosier followers are looking forward with much interest to this indication of strength. —o- ■ ♦ in i United Press AllAmerican Grid Team 1, _——- ♦ Tappa, Southern California, end. < Hammon, So. BAWBAIt Coach IverettS. Dean Mona University Illi ■ -.v 1 9EK MO - ML • ; HBFMM JSSSSSSB SEI ARTICLE VII BASKET SHOOTING Basket shooting is the most important fundamental, consequently much time should lie spent on it in practice. Basket shooting practice should be closely supervised to prevent players from developing bad habits in shooting form. Accurate shooting is essential to the team's success. Coaches should keep alive a keen Interest in basket practice through compet'tive drills. There are conflicting Ideas by coaches as to the proper method of shooting long shots, Some coaches are for the under hand shot. Many coaches ate strong advocates of the chest shot while others ale equally strong for the underhand shot. Many coaches however believe in allowing the player to shoot Ms natural way, in order to get a higher degree of accuracy. The chest shot form as seen in the first picture above offers a very versatile position from which the player can pass or shoot. Relaxation and concentration are two important factors in shooting. The shooter concentrates on the near rim shooting-with a medium arc, natural English and with a full follow through which gets his body into the shot and in a gootk follow up position. The chest shot Is quicker and harder to guard. The underhand shot is shown in the second picture. This shot is a little More accurate than the chest shot but It takes a man with very clever foot work to use it effectively. The hackguard can use the underhand shot well because of the many times he is tingarded on long shots. The underhand free throw method is generally considered belter because of the greater accuracy. All teams should make a high per-! centage of their short shots. There are I many details in the correct execution ' of the short shot, one of the most Im-j portant. being the takp off. The player I tages off six to eight feet from the I basket according to his stride and does not release the ball until at the highest point ot' his jump. The shot :s always made with one hand, the ball being placed against the backboard aboiil one foot over the basket. The-ball I should leave the tips of the fingers! with natural English. There are other types ot' shooting, but none quite so important as the ones’ discussed.
