NEW YORK Nov 2«-(U.R>-Tli<. “bogey” of the long skirt and raised ■ wahtline has ost al! ite terrors to the weli informed woman, since it makes ■ •■•> insistent claim tor extreme interpretation. These terms are comparative ■ rafl-r than positive, and have had the stimulating effect of getting fashions ■ more talked about titan is their usual fate. The success of the new style movement which took more exact form with ■ the proclaiming of The Fall Fashion has been little short of astonishing.
■ Title, there has been feeble contro- ■ versy and printed protest which has ■brought fashions more forcibly into general conversation than even the doubtful decency of the short skirt. However, even the ripples of antagonism. frequently incited by those utterly without the gift of reading psychology in style evolution, were the result of a confusion in the understanding of the fashion terms quoted. With tjie opening or assembling of style collections for a second season, these terms are being qualified -clarified, and those women who were panicky over the exaggerations of the long limbed and high waisted silhouette have been entirely converted to. the idea that its interpretation may be modified to the individual type and taste. Many of those who tilted at “the I arbitrary dictates of Paris arbiters of style" in bitter fashion, were labor- | ing under the delusion that “long skirts” meant ankle length, or hems sweeping the pavement, and that the “short waistline” compelled the belting of the costume just under the bust. With the mention of corsets, visions of the straightjacket stays of the "laced” 'period, steeled to the hilt, were called up, a terrifying ghost of yesteryear. These ghosts have been laid to i rest, and women are having the time I of their lives remodeling themselves nearer to the modes and their own desire. Os English Derivation The word debenture is allied to a Middle England word debentur, which means a receipt. It was so called because such receipts formerly began with the Latin words, “debenture mihl,” meaning "there are owing to me.” Real Enjoyment We enjoy ourselves only In our | work, our doing; and our best doing . is our best enjoyment—Jacobi.
