YELLOW JACKETS TAME AUBURN IN GREAT NET TILT Curtismen Romp Away To A 28-25 Win; Girls Are Beaten, 24-18 Decatur high school Yellow Jackets, playing a great game of basketball turned hack Auburn high school netters at Auburn Wednesday night before a large crowd of Decatur and Auburn net fans. The final score! was 28-25 and the game was one I of the finest exhibitions of basketball a local team has ever displayed. More than 100 Decatur fans braved the cold, wind and -mow and made the trip to Auburn, with little optimism prevailing before the game. All those who made the trip in the blinding snow storm were well paid for their loyality and the Curtismen showed their appreciation by winning. Auburn ha» a team of veterans and i Coach Zeke Young did not hesitate to state following the Decatur victory that he was both surprised and disappointed. In the curtain raisers the Auburn second team handed the; Decatur second team its first defeat | ( of the season, 19-10. I The Decatur girls lost a hard- J , fought scrap to the Auburn girls, IS- , 24. In the big game, Auburn started out ( with a flash of s»eed and on the first , play of the game scored a field goal. , In the first three minutes the Auburn , netters had piled up a 6-0 lead over the Jackets. Captain Carl Gerber i asked for time-out. The Auburn < crowd was wild and the big veteran i Young-coached team was restless dur- I ing the time-out period. 1 When time was called the Curtis- < men got control of the ball and in a i few seconds Dick Engle shoved the I hall through the net for the first Decatur counter. After a few minutes, I the count was tied and with about 1 five minutes remaining in the first period. Debolt started sink'ng long shots from all angles. The score at the half was 17-9 in favor of Decatur, | In the second stanza, Auburn ttegq-1 t ated a rally early, and pruned the' Decatur lead down to 4 points. 1 Schnepp, Gerber. Reynolds and Debolt each hit the net for counters J and then the Curtismen played a safe' brand of basketball. The Jackets led 26-19 with five miti- ] utes remaining. Coach Young sent in ( his longshot artists and Decatur be- i( gan slowing down its speed.. The,. Curtismen held a 5-point margin and! just as the gun sounded, ending the . game, Davidson, Auburn forward let ( the hall fly into the net. The final' score was 28-25 in favor of the Jackets. Coach Herb Curtis used only five' men in the entire game and all five! players accounted well for their be-! ing on the team. The defense at times was impassable and on several occasions the Jacket offensive men would dribble in with no Auburn players near. A large crowd attended the scrap and the Auburn cheering section re-j fused to surrender any time during 1 the game. The Decatur girl’s high I s< hool club, Pep Champs, performed i well for Decatur and cheered the Jac-, kets on.
