I carry out that plan. He tries to Improve the conditions of the child ut home and at school, finds him wholesome friends, recreation, employment, or docs any of a hundred things which tile special needs of that child seem to demand. If the child does not respond to this informal treatment, an affidavit is filed against him, the child and Ills patents arc summoned into court, and the case becomes official. Effective probation saves money to tlie taxpayers, reduces crime, and reclaims many who would otherwise lie come criminals. Its investigations, before a sentence is imposed, make for greater justice. It costs about S3OO to keep a person in prison a year, and the average prisoner is in prison about ten years of Ids life, costing the taxpayers $3,000. Probation costs only about S3O per head a year, and a year of probation is likely to start the probationer on the right path. S3O against $3,000! it is one hundred times cheaper to salvage a delinquent than to neglect him. Probation reduces crime by reducing the number of criminals.
