Republican politicians seem to be so busy healing up breaches at In-1 diauapolis and Washington that they don't have time to do any thing for the people. Well, here we go for another week. It will be just as good as we make it. Worrying about the markets and the possibilities of bad times and the delay of congress and other things that alter all don’t effect us greatly, , means just a loss of time. Business is good in Decatur and I i < there is the outlook for the best fall! trade in years. Those who advertise and who make a real effort to [ get business will have it and those I ! 1 who don't have only themselves to ~ 1 blame. An Indiana judge has held that 1 having home brew in the house is f not sufficient reason for taking a ( child away from the parent. He prob-. 1 ably had in mind the fact that if it 1 were, elaborate arrangements would ’ - be necessary to care for all the chil- [ dren that could tie thus accumulated. It is inconvenient perhaps to haul less than your truck will carry but with the roads soft you are saving ini' every way in the long run. If youri, I ‘ highways become so cut up they have to be closed you will find it a lot ■ . 11 more inconvenient to say nothing of 1 the extra cost thus imposed on the I1 tax payers. _________ i The young republicans in the sen- j ate are trying to unload Senator James E. Watson, of Indiana, as lead- 1 er. They will perhaps not find any one as smooth to take his place and i if there is any thing in the world that will act as a tonic to Jim it is 1 for him to get word they are pulling 1 something on him. Employes of Cook county and Chi-,' cago art frightened again. For j months they have been having a difficult time getting salaries and now it i is announced that no loan has been arranged for December. With winter near and Christmas in sight there is no reasop for those who hold the soft jobs up there to be making whoopee. Santa may overlook them unless something can be done. Chri.jruas clubs over the United States will distribute 160u.00u.000 the next month which ought to and will help a lot of folks. After all thats the smart investment. Those who bough' stocks find they are worth less than they paid for them in most instances but those who made, weekly deposits in a saving club will get the principal plus four per cent interest and the best part of it is they have saved it. Purdue wins the title in the Big Ten football conference, having won every game played so far. They meet Indiana next Saturday but the outcome of that battle will not effect the championship for no other team can l;aVe so good a record. They defeated lowt Saturday. At the same time Notre Dame took Southern California and Indiana nosed out Northwestern giving the Hoosier fans plenty of thrills for the week-end. The Child Health Clinic to be held monthly in this county is a fine thing
TODAY’S CHUCKLE Syracuse, N. Y., —(UP) —A gold watch, lost twenty years ago while riding in a horsedrawn cab recently was returned to Mrs. Della Gray. It was found in a pawn shop. and numerous mothers who took their children to last week’s clinic w. re delighted with the examinations and the advice given, so that defects now minor cun be corrected in the children and thus make them healthy and happy. The work is done by trained nurses and physicians under direction of the state board of health and is absolutely free, giving everyone an opportunity to use the clinic. A fellow "ragged" the umpire in a ball game over at Paulding. 0., last month and the "ump" got mad and hit him. The fellow died a few moments afterwards. The man who 'struck the fatal blow and whose name : was Crone was arrested and fined S2W. The verdict probrfbiy meets public sentiment but it seems rather queer this far away. If the man was guilty of any thing the punishment was rather light and if he wasn't I guilty why should he be "soaked" for such an amount? • One dollar is all a membership to the Red Cross costs and its certainly worth that when you consider the good constantly done by this great organization. The dollar is of course only sufficient for a reserve so that nurses and emergency trains can be rushed to scenes of great suffering When a terrible disaster occurs it is often times necessary to ask for special aid. We are proud of the fact that Adams county has never yet fallen down on a drive for the Red Cross and we hope it never will. The drive for membership began yesterday and will continue until Thanksgiving Day. Lets make it 100% again. —o MODERN ETIQUETTE By ROBERTA LEE Q. Should a gentleman ever make a present of wearing apparel to a girl? A. No, .except some article which would be ornamental, such as a fur scarf, a beautiful handbag, or a fan. Q. Should a gentleman rise when a lady enters the room? A. Yes, and he should remain standing until the hostess seats herself. Q. What should the course of a luncheon be? A. There should not be less than three courses. Suggestions would be first, soup or fruft, followed by a main course and then dessert. Or a main dish, salad, and desert. o Household Scrapbook By ROBERTA LEE Ice on Cement Steps . Sprinkle several handfuls saltpeter I on the cement or stone steps to thaw the ice on them. To keep ice from forming on steps, wash them with hot water in which a handful of salt is dissolved. This is better than sprinkling with salt. Hard Paint Brushes To soften hard paint brushes, soak them for about twenty-four hours in raw linseed oil, and rinse out in hot turpentine, repeating the process until they are clean. Labeling Fruits and Preserves Instead of using the ordinary paper label, which often does not adhere properly, try using a strip of white adhesive tape to label bottles, jars and cans. It is a great inprovement over the paper label. _—o — . .. Highest prices paid for Eggs in November and December by the buyers. WANT TO LOOK YOUNG? The secret of keeping young Is to feel young—to do this you must watch your liver and bowels—there’s no need of having a sallow complexion—dark rings under your eyes—pimples —a bilious look in your face—dull ryes with no sparkle. Your doctor will tell you ninety per cent of ail sickness comes from inactive bowels and liver. Dr. Edwards, a well-known physician in Ohio, perfected a vegetable compound as a substitute for calomel to act on the liver and bowels, which he gave to his patients for years. Dr. Edwards Olive Tablets are gentle in their action yet always effective. Tliey help bring about that natural buoyancy which all should enjoy by toning up the liver and clearing the I system of impurities. Dr. Edwards Olive Table.s are knownbytheirolivecolor.lsc,3oc,6oc.

Her ankle was wrenched. She stayed at her post calling nurses and doctors until the switchboard became so hot that she had to leave. At the same time flames from the X Ray room were licking across the corridor at her face. Three doctors, who had been aiding in ge ting the invalids from the tlvrd floor which was the nucleus of the fire, were trapped as the stairway was cut off by searing tongues of flame They were Dr. Russob Jaeikie, Dr. John Logan and Dr. John Richard. With the fire lashing at them, they I sought a window at the end of a [ corridor as their only means of escape.
