FAST PACE OF U. S. SEEN AS , “TERRIFYING” French Editor Says Americans Should Learn to Do Nothin# By Richard D. McMillan (United Press Staff Correspondent) Paris, Aug. '—(UP)—The present generation of Americans have been weighed In the balance and sadly fouud wanting. They haven't learned the art of doing nothing. The indictment is that of M. Rene Puaux, chief foreign editor of the powful French newspaper "Le Temps" who has made a trip to the United States under the auspices of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Like most European visitors, M. Puaux was amazed by what he saw In America, but like so many of his philosophic countrymen he wonders whether all that Americans are striving for in the dally rush is worth the trouble. "The tremendous pace of life in America Is simply terrifying” he states. "The meal in a minute was the announcement I saw over a San Francisco restaurant. A skyscraper in a few months!” Cooking Indicted A meal in a minute to Frenchmen Is little short of sacrilege. The recollection of the slogan evoked from the eminent French journalist a well-in-tentioned diatribe v against American culinary habits. “Not only do Americans not knowhow to live —since they have not learned the art of doing nothing—they do not know how to eat or how to cook." he holds “American cooking is ruined by being too complicated. By constantly trying new refinements, Americans will destroy the dish and incidentally their stomachs. "A plain lamb chop does not satisfy them, although when properly cooked there is nothing more delicious. No. that would be to simple and soon your American chef mixes several sauces together and pours that over the chop, then adds a piece of pineapple and a dash of grapejuice. Os course, result is a mess." •Life in the United States is lopsided, is another conclusion of this newspaperman. , Moderation Unknown “Americans have no conception of wha; moderation is" he contends ‘Everything they do they do to excess.

No repose. “1 often think that my concierge tn his little roo smoaking his pipe all day long is u happier man than many of your Americans with their cars and radios." But he believes that the hectic conditions tn America are only temporary, maybe for another two generations. Then Individuality will assert itself. At present there is too little individuality because of super organization, which, incidentally, made M Puaux understand at last why American tourists are content to be hauled about Paris like droves of sheep. Although he is much of an optimist a bout the future of the United States, he cannot get away from the present. He sums up: "Wonderfully interesting. Rut the present generation of Americans are not happy—they are too busy being efficient and successful.” ■■ —oFAMILY REUNION CALENDAR August 29 Fifth annual reunion of Foor Family, William High farm. 1 mile southeast of Ohio City, Ohio.
