Folks are funny these days. One of the young ladies in the aviation contest alighted safely from the clouds and then fainted when a mouse ran across her path. 1 That Chicago thug who went to sleep while holding up thirty-five patrons of a “hot dog” stand was certainly engaged in the business for the thrills.
The tariff bill has been completed by the senate committee which no doubt means that considerable of a fuss u 11 be on when it is submitted for there are many objections and from many sources. We are going to have a street fair and so tar as plans are possible Jt will be a good one. The rest of its success is up to the folks. If you co-operate and help to make it a big week it will be one and of course you will do that. Keep th weeds down. The showers make them grow rapidly at this time of year. We are a little inclined to feel the summer is over as September approaches but there will be two months ■ f tine weather yet, much travel and thousands will pass your property. Billy Sunday has changed his mind it is now reported, and will accept the offer c.f a million dollars to enter the talkies. Billy says it will give him the opportunity to speak to more people, but tlfcre are many who will believe the million also had something to do with it.
Indications for a brisk fall business in this locality are splendid and the merchants here are busy now with preparations for it. They are buying n w stock, arranging their stores, painting fronts and otherwise getting ready to sell you the best goods at the lowest prices. It pays to trade in Decatur where we offer more. The young lady who went on a check raising marathon at Fort Wayne is of course to blame, but it seems there must have been considerable laxity among the business houses where she passed fifteen checks for various amounts before any one took the trouble to ascertain whether or not they were good. The annual teachers' institute will convene Monday and the program as announced by Superintendent Striker is one of the best ever offered. The teachers should be able to gain much from the session which is to continue but three days this year. Decatur will welcome the visitors with the hope that they enjoy every min ute of their stay. — —...— ... It is good news that the epidemic of hog cholera in this county has been checked for every one knows that the entire profit of a year on the farm can be wiped out in a few days by this disease. The quick action of County Agent Christen and others did much to stop the spread and all j&o : >'assisted in this work deserve gre'at credit. <"■ It you wish to make a real safe in’vestment and at the same time aid your county, buy one or more of the issues of macadam road bonds now be’ng offered without bidders. These bonds pay a good interest return and are absolutely safe. Every minute every day in this country 170000 cigarette stubs are thrown down and statistics show that many of the files in forests, towns and everywhere are thus started. It requires only about a three mile gale to fan oue of these butts into a flame and if there happens to be something near that is inflammable, a conflagration results. Watch where you throw them.
Homewood is the name of Decatur’s newest subdivision and in future years will lie much talked about for as the years slip by hundreds of people will reside there. We Congratulate Mrs. Miller on her suggestion and her success in the contest to select the name. There were scores of replies and many of them excellent, but those to whom fell the duty of the selection chose this one because it so well describes the new addition.
—EDITORIAL K— Governor Leslie has issued a proclamation. asking each town in Indiiana to participate in the "Mark Your Town Week," September 9th to 14th, by painting the name of the town in letters six feet high on top of the tallest building in the town, for the guidance of aviators and giving publicity to the location of progressive municipalities. The idea is alright but Decatur beat them to it through the Knight Hawk club, which several months ago thus designated the city for the benefit of the air travelers. —o Union City—Elmer E. Frank has been chosen by the city council to succeed the late M. Welbourn as, mayor of Union City. He was a member of the city council eight years ago.
