Eight people die of thirst in the Mojav desert Is the news that flashed I over the wires yesterday, of unusual' Interest because it has been many; years since such an unfortunate Incident lias been reported. Back in the last century such reports were quite common and in the days of the gold rush hundreds met death trying to make their way across the hot sands. The deaths now reported came when an automobile broke down far from civilization and no aid could be obtained. According to the missing department of the New York city police bureau, seven thousand runaway girls left their homes and reached that city last year. It would be interesting to know how many of those girls secured jobs and made good, how many went back home and made good, how many ruined their lives. Keeping the young folks happy and satisfied these days seems to be rather a difficult job, more so than in the old days when the limit of ambition was to get to the annual spelling school or the commencement ball. Out in LaSalle county, Illinois, the farmer women have an organization. At one of the meetings a few weeks ago one of the women suggested an "Adamless Eden" excursion as a vacation. They agreed and the women, twenty-eight of them, hired a bus and for two weeks forgot dishes, bed making, the cows, chickens, kids and husband. They wanted to be free and claim they had a wonderful time. They* came back to the routine happy and ready for another year on the job. Bet dad was the happiest one in the outfit when he saw mom climbing out of the old bus.
