If your friends are not taking the paper, tell them to do so. Wheat goes down to one dollar per bushel, first time in fourteen years, which is of course not just what was promised the farmers w*ho voted the republican ticket last Nomember and many of them are trying to figure out just why this should be when the stock prices on most other quotations are soaring. We admit we don t understand it but we feel sure there must be a reason. It will probably be some time before any one breaks the record just established by Robbins and Kelly. The former is a self-made flyer, never having taken any schooling while Kelly is a regular wild west bronco buster. They flew their old plane, “Fort Worth’’ for 172 hours and then made a perfect landing when the propeller "busted.” However don't bet that this record won’t be beaten for Americans are great to try things and many will do so this year. Adams county, backed by the citizens of Decatur, and especially the American Legion, will put on a street fair in the city of Decatur on September 10 to 14. a continuous round of pleasure and education. The promoters expect to give premiums on many items of interest on the farm, ladies' work, and in many respects the fair at Decatur will be like that of the Bluffton exhibition. And Bluffton wishes her sister city success and she can, and will, have it. — Bluffton Banner. Did you read the first chapter of French Quinn’s story on “Adams County, Way Back When — Before 1S90?” If you did we are sure you will want to go on with it and if you didn’t, you should hunt up last evenings paper and read it. We suggest that you make up a scrap book volumn of this interesting account of early life in this community. You wil probably refer to it numerous times in the future for it contains■ many items that will interest you and i your family and friends.. The new automobile license law is i not a very rigid one and unless it is pepped up 'by those in charge of enforcing it will not help much but the purpose back of it of course is to cause safer driving and we are all for that so tfie thing to do is to cooperate and to aid the officials every way we can to bring about better observance of laws and rules in driving. The first thing of course is to secure a license for each member of the family that drives. That you must dcijl)i- Jt|ly jit And'no backing up. TODAY’S CHUCKLE Spokane. Wash., —CUP)—"Batecha 1100 you can’t arrest me," Charles Hutchinson, a farmer who was showing utter disregard for the 18th Amendment, shouted at Policeman Burger. Burger didn’t bet, but if he had he would have won.
the open road. In this connection, a plea just issued by the American Nature Association Is worth keeping in mind. The association, briefly, pleads for good manners by the outdoor enthusiasts, tourists and campers a like. It urges roving Americans to leave the beauties of nature as they find them—to put out camp fires when they are through with them, to clean up their rubbish, to respec* the rights of people they encounter. The association's plea deserves hearty endorsement, and it is to be hoped it will be given attention by all who seek their vacations in the open air. Newspaper advertising was recommended as the best means of reaching the public by a speaker before the general assembly of the Presbyterian church. What is good for business should be good for the church. The church was urged to adopt a program of paid advertising. "The business world spends millions for publicity where the church spends dollars," the speaker declared. Os course, newspapers are liberal with reading space to churches as a matter of news, but it was pointed out that the church has a message for humanity which it could to advantage express In the large use of paid advertising space. “The Presbyterian publicity department has faith that some day religion will be adequately advertised and will reap vast rewards as are now accumulated by less worthy enterprises," Walter Irving Clarke, director of publicity declared. What applies to the Presbyterian church also applies to other denominations. Some church members might consider it unethical to advertise, but in one sense the church is selling religion and one way, the best proven way to reach the public, is through advertising.—New Castle Courier, o Household Scrapbook By ROBERTA LEE Wax Paper The wax paper that comes from a round bread is excellent for wiping off the gas range after each meal, for it polishes as well as cleans. He could not singe the birds and talk all negation into poaltivenesa. He was irresistible aird unresisted. He had vision and his favorite sentence was, *'Cotne on boys." He landed in Allen county. Intended there to stay, but that county was too crowded. To the south of him was a stretch of territory that was without home or name or mother. That appealed to Samuel. Forthwith he waded streams, forded inland lakes, traversed the wilderness and reached Indianapolis. Indianapolis had authority those days like unto that of this day. He told those fellows there convincingly that he wanted to mother, name and inhabit certain territory and as advance information he wanted that county named Adams county. They agreed. He got his county. He journeyed back and marked his responsibiity by length and breadth and put up his stake. Now. he had a county, named to be sure but no more capital than a rabbit. Confidently he picked a spot, felt satisfied with the location. Others felt satisfied also because, you know. Samuel was satisfied. What to name the blamed thing might have

puuled some. Not Samuel however. It was easy as easy could be for him 'Was he not born in 1805. that gallant year when Stephen Decatur made his brilliant exploit in far off Tripoli ? Who dared be forced nhead of Stephen in heroic lore, less it be John Paul Jones? Be it remembered that Samuel in company with all of America for three decades from 1805 rated Decatur far ahead of that John Paul, ahead of Caesar or Napoleon and felt perhaps that he rushed the "Father of his country" for first place. Samuel was a Stephen Decatur enthusiast, j Decatur to him was magic word, that had power within itself. Decatur was the kind of red blooded American that I Samuel insisted than who none better | had existed or would exist and whose ; name was » first class, complete and endurable synonint for everything < that was the last word in all the vir | tues. Samuel all along had said so. The welkin rang with the knowledge | of his preference. Without the slight- j est hesitation then he named the baby, spunked it’too, perhaps between times. ■ for his love was of a sternness, it may be said. For eighteen long years Samuel did double duty as his county's clerk and recorder and then to some extent he weaned the youngster and branched out a litte in helping Indiana find herself.
