STONE TREES IN MONTANA (leorgn K. Helmer (United Preen Staff Correspondent) Hillings. Mont. May 17 (UP)—Discovery of a large forest of petrified trees in Eastern Montana has increased interest in the program of developing a highway system in the Mate that will open scenic wonders to tourists. Announcement of the petrified forest discovery was made here by E. E. Iloddis. district counsel of the bureau of reclamation, upon his return from a trip through Eastern Montana. The forest, covering four or five acres, is located 30 miles northeast of Glendive. Some of tlie former forest monarchs are 10 feet in diameter. All of the petrified remains are lying parallel, in a northeast-southwest direction, av though blown by a terrific prehistoric gale. No layers of wood are visible in the solid units of the rock trees. Roddis expressed his opinion that the trees belonged to the "coal tree" forests of the geological area although

they turned to sand stone Instead of This ronehtslon was supported by the discovery of a roal vein in an adjacent hill, on the saute stratum of the earth's surface us the petrified trees. The forest is within sight of the highway between Glendive and Williston, tlie principal route through the lower Yellow stone section. Roddis bellevea that they have always iteen considered as mere slabs of ordinary sandstone. The trees have been eroded until many of them are elliptical rather than round. The largest of the trees, 10 feet comparable to the giant red woods in diameter and 150 feet long is of California. Dwight F. COMPENSATION IS SOUGHT FOR PRISON YEARS Wisconsin Ma n Believed Jailed For Crime He Did Not Commit Mailisn, Win., May 17—(UP) —An effort is under way here to obtain legillative compensation for John A. Johnson, 65. who served 10 years in pt Ison for a crime it now generally is believed lie did not commit. Although Johnson confessed in 1911 to the murder of seven-year-old Annie Lenibcrger. he repudiated his confession Just before he entered the gates of Waupau prison. In 1922 he was pardoned by Gov. E. L. Philipp, who had been convinced the man confessed because of a morbid fear of mob violence. There are more than 3,000 Madison citizens who now are certain society "robbed” Johnson of ten working years of his life and who have signed petitions asking the legislature to compensate .him. as far as possible, for that which was taken. Johnson, an employe of the city has aged rapidly and is in none too good health. He still vorks, but his earning power is small and he and the wife who trusted him during his years of imprisonment are not enjoying the comforts they might have had. Girl Beaten to Death Annie Lemberger, daughter of Martin Lenibcrger, was put to bed by her mother about 9 o’clock the night of September 5, 1911. Several days later her body was found floating in Monona bay. She had been beaten to death. Johnson was arrested three days later and was questioned by a deteci*l i mu————i
