■EXPERTS STUDY IOEATH-DEALING WIND TWISTERS edge Os Tornadoes Joseph 11. Baird d p res s Staff Correspondent I ' Washington. April 26-<UP) ~n lle, | Stat,- Weather Hnreen has Jrnel >""<'• ,WO yPP r .lit the "twisters" which frequently Jr havoc with the middle west, the fwitetl i’ress was told today. Revolving at speeds between 2tW» J SW miles per hour, they pounce "' unsuspecting villages from their birth pla re 1,1 ,hP c,oUdß ' Rising as suddenly as they descend. Ihe ,e giant vortexes seize another vieL Oll ly to rise again. They usually , r .,vel from 10 to 15 miles horizontally before dissipating themselves. These -twisters." according to Weather Bureau scientists, have been known to drive straws into trees, hurl scantlings into steel, and sweep surprised victims into the air only to deposit them gently and safely half a mile away. Origin Obscure So much of the habits of tornadoes. Their origin? “Ttat,” it was said, “is obscure, though much light has been thrown on the subject during the last two rears. The out-of-doors is a big laboratory. So one wants to get near enough to these deathdealers to study them closely. In the few instances when they have passed over meteorological apparatus, it has wrecked. “Broadly speaking,” one scientist raid, "we have learned they tire caused by currents of hot and cold air. the former usually moving north and the latter south, which, coming together, form a rapidly whirling vortex whose speed grows as its size diminishes.” The Mississippi valley is the most tornado infested region in the world. Wbrm winds moving northward over the Gulf of Mexico meet there with cold air currents from the northern Rockies. "Twisters" often result. They are rare on the Atlantic sea- | hoard and virtually unknown on the j Pacific Coast. After the Mississippi valley, Australia has more tornadoes -which are popularly an deroneously known as "cyclones"—than any other part of tbe globe. Move Counter-Clockwise In the northern hemispuhere, it was saidl tornadoes alwaj’it moire in a counter clock wise direction because of the earth's rotation. Below the equator their motion is clockwise. Tlie small whirlwinds one sees dancing over fields on warm summer days are not miniature tornadoes, as is popularly believed. They are formed always by warm air on the earth's surface and may rotate in either or two directions. Only in Arizona, according to the Weather Bureau, do they i v, i- attain enough velocity to be

The popular idea that one should close doors and windows when a tornado approaches is wrong, file Weather Bureau said. Much of a twister's damage results from the sudden expansion .of air in houses which results in an explosion. Openings allow the air free course and prevent this damage, it was said. Although the Weather Buretta cannot forecast tornadoes with accuracy, it does kno win advance of conditions likely to form them. These, however are not localized and a warning broadcast for a large vicinity often alarms the inhabitants uselessly. o 1 S¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ S * NEWS FROM PREBLE * S¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥E9 Mrs. Milton Kidd and Mrs. Charles Williams, of Plymouth, spent the weekend visiting Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hoffman ami family, and attended the commencement exorcises at Kirkland, Friday evening. CARILLON IN STATE CAPITAL Indianapolis, April 26 —(UP) —Americas largest carillon, which occupies the tower of the new Scottish Rite Cathedral here, will he dedicated some time in May. It is the gift of Arthur R. Baxter. In recent months the Singing Tower in southern Florida, erected by Edward W. Bok, has attracted wide attention. President Coolidge dedicated it and Anton Brees played 'the first musical program. There are 61 bells in the bird sanctuary tower. The Baxter carillon has 63, giving a range of approximately four octaves. Brees will be here for the dedication and is expected to remain for the next six months. He came to America through an arrangement with link and Baxter to play the Florida carillon six months and the Indianapolis carillon six months each year. Meanwhile lie expects to teach others to play the hells. The bells for the Bok and Baxter cailllons were east at the Taylor foun<lry in Loughborough, England. They

range in weight from a few pounds up to 12 tons and are distinguished from chimes in that they are immovable while chime bells swing They may be played in three ways. One is by use of a keyboard similar to a pipe organ; the second Is the clavier —worked with hand and foot pedals and handles—end the third is by use of perforated music rolls, such as are used in player pianos. Tuning the large belts is a delicate operation. Each is placed with the mouth up, on a steel table, where it rotates while a chisel is so fastened that it shaves off the metal at places marked by the tuner. These bells have to be placed on the “cradle” time after time before the operation is completed —— o—, — MAN WANTED to deliver coal; also drive truck. Call 770.
