By Paul W. White (United Press Staff Correspondent) New Haven, Conn., April 22 —(UP) ley's "Believe It Or Not” failed to provide you with sufficient useless thought fascinating fnformation. there is now another source-book. It is "Devils, Drugs and Doctors," written by Howard W. Haggard. Ml)., and published by Harpers. Although a thorough study of the science of healing from the days of the medicine man to modern surgeons it is replete with such out-of-the-way details and almost incredible facts as established Ripley vogue. For instance you may not know: That the potato when first introduced into Europe was regarded as medicine, not food —and as an aphrodieiac. That between 80 and 90 per cent of all sick get well on any or no treatment. That Egyptian mummy dust we once considered hot stuff in the treatment of almost any disease. That James Graham, a London quack advertised a Celestial bed. the use of which, at a price, assured conception to ?he occupants. That Royalty once was supposed to have curative powers but that William HI in touching his subjects would murmer, "May God give you better health and more sense.” That Benjamin Franklin wrote a book of directions on how to swim. That a Bishop of Lausanne once excmomunicated all the Maybugs in his diocese. One of tlie outstanding biographies I of the season is M. R. Werner's "Bry-1 an" (Harcourt-Brace). Soon after publication of his "Brig-1 ham Young” Werner began to receive i indignant letters from Mormons who i assured him that heaven was not to be I his lot. Now similar letters from members of other faiths are pouring in—for the young biographer handled Bryan less than worshipfully. Indeed this one paragraph of Werner's sums up a. goodly portion of the I book: “When in doubt, said Bryan, look around you. What he saw was for him not only less than what there was. I but also an assurance that there was I more. For him, ‘seeing is believing’ was a puny faith. There was no room NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS Notice is hereby given that MONDAY, MAY 6, 1929 will be the last day to pay the Spring installment of taxes. The county office will be open from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m. during the tax paying season. AU taxes not paid by that time will become delinquent and a 10% penalty will be added. We will be glad to mail the paid receipts to those who mail in their checks to this office before the final tax-paying date. ED ASHBAUCHER, Treasurer of Adams county, Indiana Apr 3 to May 5

for humility in such a mind as his. An agnostic accepted the evidences of his senses and made the most of them, but Bryan created out of his hopes and fears the complete picture of bliss that was so necessary to his peace of mind. In the material world he fought against injustice for the common man, and no politician of his time had a wider emotional sense of that injustice than Bryan, for he was a common man. He tried to change the laws to meet his ethics, but when he failed, which was more often than not, because his mentality was never tuned to the actual desires and aspirations of his fellow men, he took refuge in a profound daydream of supreme grace ordaining an eternal happiness, based ujion the principles of Christ ami the laws of Moses. Thus existence became for him a great Sunday school; on the clsing day — commencement would be distributed and punishments meted out." More or less personal: . Joseph Hergesheinier "Swords and Roses” says that if a girl finds a boy friend who can make her laugh she should value him above all others. . . . Thointon Wilder's “The Bridge of San Luis Rey" apparently is enpoying a huge sale in Hungary. A. and C. BonLrecently received from Budapest a check for $1.94. . . .
