The final effort to renew our subscriptions is now being made and wo are-hoping tnat every one of our readers will have taken care of this little obligation within the next week or ten days. The time is about up for candidates for city offices to file declarations as candidates. Just why there is so much mystery is a little difficult to explain but for some reason or other there seems to’ be a lack of interest that should not exist. They are trying to figure out just what the results in the recent election means, since the state which voted against Smith now gives a majority of more than 100.000 for the repeal of the liquor laws. That's easy. Its a wet republican state. If the state highway commission spends the year trying to decide who the director is we won’t get much accomplished in the way of road building during 1929. That's not only wrong but an expense to the taxpayers that ought to be duly resented some day in an election. Mr. Williams and Mr. Brown are both claiming the job as director of the state highway commission which is alright until it comes to drawing the salary.- Whoever is able to do that will probably be given the advantage by«he public. • — No'w that Wisconsin has voted wet what are they going to do about it? Will the breweries that made Milwaukee famous reopen and will the distilleries be given the right to sell liquor? That is up to the Washington administration we presume and it will be interesting to watch developments. It is the hope of every good, honest citizen in this state that the state highway commission will not be made a political football. That is the danger of course. The commission has to do with the expenditure of some twenty million dollars of the tax payers money each year. It is far more important how that money is spent than whether a few poll book holders have jobs. The Industrial Association is planning for a busy year and they ask for your cooperation. Alone they can do little but supported by every citizen they can make some real headway. The membership should be increased and every one given a job to do. Then every one else should assist those who are striving to boost the community. Remember these men who are working at the task of making this a better place in which to live are doing their work only for the general good. They deserve your help. Please don't neglect sending in your contributions to our "Town Talk" column. Every body agrees that this is one of the 'best features we have x ever added and we want to continue t - ' *, it. Remember we can only do it if we have your assistance for unless you tell us the items of interest that only you know about we can't get them. Call us by telephone, number 1,000 and give us your local itess. We will appreciate it and so will all our readers.
P TODAY’S CHUCKLE Lynn, Maa». —(UP)—A restaurant proprietor complanied to police here that high sclool girls •, were coming to his case every dav ■. at noon and bringing their own t lunches, a practice which he declared in restraint of trade. The easements on road sixteen be--2 0 tween this city and Huntington should ’ be secured next week and it is the job 5 j of those interested here to secure ’ them between Decatur and the Wells ) j county line. Don't put it off for we are save that delay just now is dangerous if we really want the road and we are sure we all do. It is important, perhaps more than you think s that we have these highways which as times goes on will become national trunk lines. Road sixteen, connecting with other state highways, will . eventually connect Atlantic City and San Francisco. Don't overlook its importance folks and remember, don't delay the work of securing the easements. —————— If any farmer In Adams county has ever produced more than 1180 per acre from any portion of his farm, i we have not heard of it.. That was 1 Mr. Munro's record one year with 1 sugar beets and his average for twelve 1 years past, including the past two | ' which every one knows were not nor- i mal, has been a hundred dollars per | acre. He has signed ( ttp for this year. We should secure fifteen hundred acres in the county and a little effort on the part of those who can aid. will bring the result. That would be wonderful and would inspire the owners of the factory here to renewed efforts to please, thus benefiting every one concerned, farmers, laborers and merchants for who wil dispute the fact that this is a splendid institution for the community. o Ira Oswalt and mother.
