DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT TUESDAY, MARCH 26. 1929.
COMMODORES ARE WELCOMED HOME A tired and crippled bunch of Com modores, but every one a hero in the eyes of Decatur basketball fans, arrived in the city Monday afternoon from Chicago, where they won the plaudits of thousands of fans for their plucky fight that carried them to the semifinals of the annual national Catholic basketball tournament last week. It was a noisy welcome that greeted the Commodores and Coach George Laurent as they stepped from the Erie train about 3:30 o’clock. The coach and p'ayers, together with their big bronze trophy which they won for finishing fourth in the tourney, were loaded onto one of the city fire trucks and a parade to the business district of the city immediately got under way. With auto horns shrieking, the parade proceeded down Second street where scores of townspeople waved a hearty welcome to the players and their coach. Second street was decorated in the school’s colors of green and gold. Next week, receptions and dinners will be held for the Commodores, it was said today. An injury to Captain Petie Mylott’s shoulder near the end of the Commodores quarter-final game with Union City. New Jersey, which Decatur won, 26-16, was an unfortunate break which probably cost the Commodores the national Catholic championship. Although Mylott played the entire game against De Lasalle in the semifinals, he suffered great pain and was playing under a great disadvantage. Even with him crippled, the Chicago team, which won the championship in its next game, was trailing Decatur 15-14 with less than a minute to go when Krauss, guard, tipped the ball with one hand and it dropped through the net for the winning point. De Lasalle did not have much difficulty in the final game with Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Then, the Commodores met with another bad break in the consolation game with Spaulding Institute of Peoria, 111., to decide the third and fourth place winners, when Pat Coffee, who was playing a whirlwind
game, sustained a fracture of his right colter bone In a collision with a Spaulding player. His absence and the injury to Mylott, who played only a few minutes In the game, proved to be too great a handicap and the Commodores lost to Spaulding. The Commodores were favorites with the big crowd at the tournament. V’hen the silver watch charms, significant of fourth place in the tourney, were presented to each of the Decatur players at the close of the meet, the crowd cheered equally us loud ns when the De Lasalle players received their prize. Captain Petie .Mylott is said to have received the greatest ovation of uny player In the tournament. The Decatur Catholic high school now has three bronze basketball trophies, won by the Commodores who have finished fourth in the national tournament on three occasions. Plans have been started by the Commodores already for bringing home first honors in next year's national meet. With Captain Mylott, Gass. Wemhoff, Coffee. Gage and Harris of this year’s squad, returning next year, together with promisirg freshmen and second stringers, prospects for next season are far from dim at the local school. Commodores Express Appreciation We wish in this manner to thank the hundreds of basketball fans in Decatur and this community who support ed us during the season and made it possible for us to attend the National ( tourney at Chicago last week and for the splendid reception on our return.
