FORT WAYNE MEN ARRESTED; ONE IDENTIFIED HERE , <CONTISUBI» FHOM FtUB ONE) < year. i Marked Money Furnishes Clue . The capture f Sinniff, and partial ’ solving of at least five bank robberies , reads like a novel. The first tangible , clue was secuied when two men drove , up ta a filling station at 12 o’clock , Thursday noon at Coesse, in Whitley , county. The owner of the filling ata- ; tion. Charles Johnson, noticed that the two men appeared very nervous. , The driver ordered 10 gallons of gasoline and some bologna and crackers. One of the nren paid Johnson with two new one dollar bills, which bore pencil markings indicating the bil’s were from a federal reserve shipment. Johnson stated that while he watched the men they acted strange, and as they left he took the license number of the Buick coupe which they were driving Johnson notified Sheriff Daniel Haynes, of Whitley county, who in notified Sheriff Holjngsworth. License Plates Traced Hollingsworth immediately got in' touch with Mr. Huntington who came to this city early Saturday morning. The license plates were traced down and it was learned that the plates had been issued to H ibert Sinniff, Hayes hotel, Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne county officials aided in securing the description of Sinniff and when it tallied exactly with the description given by Lybarger of one of the robbers of the bank, it was decided to locate Sinniff and make an effort to identify him. It was learned that Sinniff had a ro.nn at the Fort Wayne hotel and Huntington and Sheriff Hollingsworth waited for several hours Saturday for Sinniff to conre to his room. He did not return and. at 9:30 o'clock Saturday night, Huntington and Hollingsworth were relieved by Junk and Brenan, of Fort Wayne Arrested Saturday Night About 10 o'clock Saturday night, Sinniff came into the hotel lobby and he was immediately arrested by the two Fort Wayne officers. Sheriff Hollingsworth and Huntington were notified and they returned immediately to Fort Wayne. Lybarger was notified at Linn Grov; and he identified Sinniff as one qf the bandits before he was removed to this city. Lybarger went into the cell at the Allen county jail and immediately recognized Sinniff as the man who entered the bank first last Thursday morning and told him he wanted some money and then shoved a gun at him. Automobile Is Identified \\ hen arrested, Sinniff was driving a car, owned by a Warsaw garage man. Lybarger also identified the car as the one which he had seen in Linn Grove a few days before the robbery supposedly when the men were looking over the town and roads, anticipating the robbery, Sinniff said that he was driving the garage owner’s car because his “was broken down". Sheriff Hollingsworth ordered the Sinniff car brought over here from Warsaw and a search revealed a pair of overalls identified by Lybarger as those worn by Sinniff when he robbed the bank. A total of sls wrapped in coin papers, also was f und in Sinniff's car. Money Is Identified The bills taken in by the Coesse filling station operator were identified as being of a federal reserve shipment which went either to Berne or Linn Grove. It is thought that the shipment had been made about the middle of last week and the only way the bills could have been •secured was directly fi'.im either a Berne bank or the Linn Grove institution. Sinniff denies being either in Berne or Linn Grove, but he does admit being in Whitley county Thursday. All day yesterday, bank officials from nearby towns and cities visited the Adams cunty jail to see the alleged bandit. Absolute identification by bank ofifcials has connected Sinniff with at least live robberies. To File Robbery Charge Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Nelson questioned Sinniff and announced last night that charges of bank robbery would be preferred al nee against Sinniff. Nelson stated that he had a strong case against Sinniff. Sheriff Hollingsworth and Mr. Huntington started immediately after Hie capture of Sinniff Io locate Hie man who was with Sinniff on the Linn Grove robbery. The identification given by Lybaiger tallies with a close personal friend of Sinniff's and an effort is being made to locate the friend. Other Arrests Expected It is thought that Sitiulff is the leader of a gang of alleged bandits who
have been terrorizing northern Indiana with robberies for more than a year ami local officials believe that the a>rest is only the start ot a series that will completely clear up more than a dozen bank robberies. Sheriff Hollingsworth stated today that he had very high regards for the Allen county officials and the Fort Wayne city police and that they assisted greatly in the capture and arrest of Sinniff. He also staled that much credit was due Mr Huntington, of the state Bureau of Criminal Identification, who worked on the case and assisted in the capture and arrest. Huntington has charge of the northern part of Indiana in connection with the state Bureau. Other representatives of the Bureau will be in this city to take finger prints of Sinniff to compare them and ascertain whether he has a criminal record.
