(1820-1892), narried first Mary Davis. Sou of Jeune Clark Hoover (IK4S--1880), married Hulda Randall Minthorn (1848-18831. Their sou, HERBERT CLARK HOOVER was born in West Branch, lowa, August 10, 1874." According to Harry M. Hoover, author of the "Huber-Hoover Family History," the original spelling of the name Hoover was "Huber." The name Huber is derived from an old German word "Hube,” pronounced Hubay, meaning Hie possessor of a tract of land. In German the name is invariably pronounced "Huver," which accounts for the subsequent variations in the English tongue such as Huver, Hover, Hoover and Hoober. Americans, states the Heraldry Society, are reminded that heraldry or coat-of-arms represent a pictorial history of families. An outstanding example is found in the frequency with which, from the founding of our republic, it lias been i stated that the stars and stripes in ■ the Washington family coat-of-arms influenced the design of the American Flag. 'Hie American Heraldry Society In tracing the Hoover heraldic history is making an effort to authenticate the accompanying illustration as the family insignia of the president. A technical description of the coat-of-arms follows: Arms—-Quarterly. Ist and 4th, a widder (English, wether or male sheep) springing over three hills, 2nd and 3rd a rose in full bloom with four leaves. Crest —Out of a ducal coronet two buffalo horns. The buffalo horns are characteristic of that early America to which Andrew Hoover came. In the language of heraldry the horns symbolize honor and distinction. 0 ...
