Why not? Decatur high school has bright basketball prospects for next season. Other, Schnepp, Debolt. Dick Rngl*\ Romp, Reynolds and Jlehble of the ten players certified for the tournament this season will be hark in school next year. There won’t he as much height on next year's team as there was on this year’s quintet, but there will he speed, fierber. Hobble, and Schnepp should furnish enough bright, however, to balance up the team, ln addition to the boys named above. Coach Curtis will have some likely looking hoys from this year's second team and perhaps one or two prospect* from Central. The Newcastle Upset Tlte upset at Newcastle this year was very similar to the one in the Decatur tourney last year when Hartford township, a team that the Decatur second team had defeated during the seust>n, eliminated the Decatur first team from the tourney. This year, Middletown, a team defeated y the Newcastle second team during the season, defeated the Newcastle Trojans in the tournament. In the final minutes of play, with the score 19-18 in favor of Middletown. Newcastle had two easy shots at the basket and one free throw and all were missed. Gene's Explanation "Thomas Paine once said, “These are times that try men's souls.” Such a time, doubtlessly, is this, when a David arises to smite a Goliath. Perhaps in such an instance a columnist 1s expected to do big things and make statements that will live. However, such is not forthcoming from this sector. The best team on the floor at the time of the game won. ‘‘lt was an upset. Undoubtedly it was the outstanding one of the entire series of sectional tourneys. However, it happened, and that's that. “There were just as many versions of the tourney as there were fans present. Os the two thousand present at. the final game, at least eight hundred saw it according to a Newcastle view-point. About seven hundred saw it front Middletown’s. The rest were neutral.”— Cene Rock, Newcastle Courier. t You’re Welcome! “In spite of all the 'stings’ ye writer received at Decatur he feels a vote of ‘thank you’ is due Decatur for giving tip the entire south side of the gym to Rerne fans, for the Kirklaml-Berne game and the Oeneva-lterne game, it showed good sportsmanship and the high school cheer master, the pupils, and the fans of Rente appreciated it.” —Time Outs, Adams County Witness. It. took Portland three overtime periods to defeat Hartford City, 2G-2-I in the semi-finals of the Portland tourney Saturday. Down at. Seymour, in the tournament Saturday, Rrownatown, one of the pre-tourney favorites, was foro-'d to finish a game with Valonia with only two men on the floor, the other six having been put out on personals. Brownstown had only four players left in the game when tlie regular playing period was up and the score . was tied at 28-all. In the overtime period, two more were sent to the showers and Valonia won, 35-29. Let’s don't forget that the Yellow Jackets won 13 games out of 18 this season, including victories over South Side, North Side, Elwood, Bluffton, Mishawaka, Kendallville, Auburn, and Columbia City. And boy, (lie fun we had over those victories! o Michigan And Wisconsin Likely To Tie For Title Chicago, Mar. 5. — (U.R) —Wisconsin and Michigan seem destined to share the 1929 basketball championship of the western conference. With all its games played, Michigan held a half game advantage today but it is almost certain that Wisconsin will even that with a victory in its final game of the season. The Wolverines have won ten games and lost two. Wisconsin has won nine and lost two and should add the necessary victory for a tie when it meets Chicago the latter part of this week. Michigan cinched a share in the title last night, with a startling 37-22 victory over the Badgers. While the game was considered a toss-up it was no thought that either team could run up a fifteen point advantage, but inspired by the defensive playing of McCoy and Rose and led offensively by Chapman, the Wolverines ran all over Wisconsin in the second half. Eight teams finished their season last night. The Wisconsin-Chicago game late in the week will write finis to this year’s race. Purdue won third place by finishing with nine won and three lost. o Get the Habit— Trade at Home, It Pay*

S—(U.R) —A review of the 1929 Rig Ten basketball season brings out a host of star players, who are entitled to consideration on allconference teams. Tlte United Press selections represent a consensus of basketball authorities. The onp outstanding player is “Stretch” Murphy, Purdue center, who clearly demonstrated his right to .the center position on the first team. Tlte high regard in whK'h Murphy was held is seen in the fact that at times the opposition had at least three men watching him. Consistent to the nth degree, Murphy has everything a good center needs. His height enabled ltis tpam to depend on the tip-off throughout the season. Tlte accuracy of his shots was remarkable. He worked in perfect harmony with his teammates and although he stood out in every flame, perhaps 'die highest tribute that can lie paid to him is the fact that not once did he show any indications of trying “to star.” There were other 4nod renters. Chapman of Michigan.*- is a great (player; Wilcox of-down; McCracken of Indiana; Van Heyde, Ohio State; Torvltopen and Kowalczvak of Wisconsin, all looked good, hut Murphy is a “natural” for the position. PURDUE, INDIANA STARS TWINKLE “Stretch” Murphy, Purdue center and Branch McCracken, star pivot man of the Indiana University quintet, flashed brilliantly last night as | Indiana’s two Big Ten basketball teams finished their season with victories. Murphy scored right field goals and six free throws for a total of 22 points as Purdue trounced Ohio State, at Lafayette, 45-34 In so doing, he established a new individual scoring record for the Big Ten with a total of 143 points for the season. The previous record was 133, made by Johnny Miner, of Ohio State, in 1925. McCracken scored ieght field goals and four free throws for a total of 20 points, as Indiana defeated lowa, at Bloomington, 35-30. He finished the season among the first eight high scorers of the conference. Both Murphy and McCracken have one more year in college and they should be the main eogs in their team play next year.
