I Hope springs eternal in the human| heart, and right now you can't convince a single basketball fan that his | particular team hasn’t a chance to ] win the state high school basketball tournament. 754 Teams Start Play The shrill blasts of the referees' whistles will send some 754 Indiana high school teams into action in the 64 sectional tourneys today and Sat- 1 urdav. Approximately 300,000 spec- 1 tators are expected to attend the tournaments. A total of 7,540 players 1 are eligible to compete in the games Thete are fourteen more teams in the tourney this year than in last year's tournament. The gates open at 6:30 o'clock tonight and the battle is on 1 in Adams county to select a winner 1 to represent this section in the Fort Wayne regional tournament next Sat- 1 tirday. Monroe high school netters and the Hartford township net aggregation i will open fire at 7:30 o'clock tonight, ' the survivor going to the semi-finals j : Saturday afternoon. Both teams are ready for the opening whistle, according to their coaches and fans of each i school and both are entertaining hopes of winning their first game. | 1 At 8:30 o'clock, Monmouth and Ge- 1 neva will tangle to decide which team goes to the semi-finals and from all 1 advance dope, the game will be a : good one. Both teams have been 1 playing "off and on" basketball, but both have improved greatly since the opening of the season. Saturday morning, at 9 o'clock. I Kiikland township, sectional champs, t will defend their title against the best team ever produced by Jefferson 1 township. At 10 o'clock tomorrow t morning, Decatur Yellow Jackets will ' meet the Berne Bears. The winners : of the first four games will then meet < in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon f and the two remaining winners will < fight it out for sectional honors. Most sport fans concede that the ( Yellow Jackets have the best oppor- 1 tunlty to win the sectional, with Kirk- < land, Berne and Jefferson all having < a chance in case the Jackets falter. Kvery team is reported to be in good ( condition and it is predicted that the tourney this year will he one of the 1 best ever held in Decatur. Season tickets will be sold until the 1 opening of the frst session tonight. Then single session tickets will be sold for each of the three sessions re- i maining. Those in charge of the ticket sale reported today that a good many i tickets already had been sold and indications were that record crowds : would attend each session. No seats will be reserved and season ticket holders will be given the preference until a half hour before the opening of each session. WHIPPETS RALLY TO WIN, 27 TO 24 After trailing 10-15 at the end of the first half, the Kirkland Whippets staged a rally in the second Half to defeat Mrnroevllle at Monroeville, ,ast nig.it, by a score of 27-24. Scott, of >;-> i aevilla was high point man, with nine points to his credit. Corson and Bill Bryan, of Kirkland, each scored eight points. Alumni Playing their last game of the seas ] on on the local hardwood, tlie Catholic high school Commodores went on a scoring spree and swamped the St. Paul Trojans, of Marion, 70-10. Bill Gass, Commodore forward, led the assault on the Grant county cagers, with an even dozen field goals and one free throw, for a total of 25 points. Captain Petie Mylott was not far behind with six field goals and three free throws. The game last night was played as a benefit to raise money to send the] Commodores to the state Catholic tourney at Indianapolis next week. A profit of about $l2O was derived from the contest, the fans being asked to contribute whatever amount they tiesited for their tickets. Coftch Laurent's boys lost no time in getting started last night and they rang up 20 points before the visitors scored on a free throw. The first half ended with the Commodores holding a 29-4 advantage. ' Coach Laurent substituted freely in the second half and when tho game ended, Kohne, Wemhoff, Mylott and Gass were sitting on the bench. The substitutes carried on the fight nobly and continued to pile up the score and at the same time hold the Trojans' offense in check. Sticken, floor guard, was the outstanding star of the visiting quintet. He scored ten of his team's twelve] points, by sinking three field goals and two free throws. In ibe first game on the program last night, the Catholic high school second team defeated the St. Joseph school eighth gradeis, 14-4. In the second game, the General Electric quintet won from ihe Catholic high school alumni, 22 to lfi, in an interesting game.
