THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY:— Everyone knows that the automobile business is one of the biggest industries in the country and the figures pertaining to it are astounding. In 1928 a total of 1,630,000 passenger cars and trucks were manufactured, the wholesale value being $3,045,820,000, or an average value of sß'6 for each passenger car. America has nearly all the automobiles. Out of 31,725,000 registered motor vehicles in the world, the’ United States is credited with 21.630,000 passenger cars. 3.120,000 trucks or 78% of all the cars in use. It is estimated that 5,450,000 are on the farms, otherwise owned by farmers. These 24,750.000 cars and trucks have 3,013,584 miles of highway to travel on, of which 615,000 are hard surfaced. In this connection it might be stated that the huge sum of $1,500,000,000 was expended in 1928 for highway construction. Persons employed in the manufacture of automobiles and allied lines are numbered at 4,110,000 while the taxes paid on motor vehicles is placed at $785,386,000. It is stated that 58% ot the new cars are sold on time or through finance organizations, the average note at time of purchase for a new car being $606 and $295 for a used car. During 1928 a total of 10,860,000,000 gallons of gasoline and 134,000,000 gallons of oil were consumed by automobiles. The automobile industry is consuming 85% of all the rubber used; 60% of the plate glass and 80 % of all the gasoline manufactured. Evidence that Americans prefer American made automobiles is shown in the figures tha' only 520 cars were imported from foreign countries last year, while other countries, including Canada bought 810,000 of our cars. Its some business and no matter what we think about the money which is taken out of small communities for purchases the country would be at a standstill if the auto industry ever decided to stop. Decatur has been allotted $65,000 to build a new postoffice building. This might seem a large sum when the ordinary building is considered but from the federal buildings we have seen this sum will not build a very large structure. The proposed site of the new postoffice is exceptionally well located, flanked on the north by the court house aud on the west by the Public Library building. We're not saying that $65,000 will not build a nice building, but as we understand it all preliminary expense aud cost of equiping the, building comes out of this fund. We're grateful for that much. We heard someone say that the Bluffton postoffice building cost $96,000 and if the new Decatur postoffice is to be any smaller than that one. it will not be long until its facilities are cramped. We would like to see a line building creeled and as the bill which includes the appropriation for Decatur totals $248,000,000, a few thousand more might not be missed. Anyway its a start towards a new postoffice aud maybe by the time final action is taken in the matter our congressman might, be able to get an increase. Other Indiana cities included in the postoffice building program are Greensburg with an al-

Even the radio announcers could not work up much enthusiasm over the tactics qf the two fighters, but the judges awarded the decision to Sharkey, which means that there'll be another fight sometime this year for the championship. A crowd of about 40,000 people, paying around $350,000 in admissions, saw the fight and must I have left Flamingo Park disappointed because there was no knockout. Sharkey receives SIOO,OOO for his 30 minutes, Stribling between $60,000 and $70,000 and the balance goes to Jack Dempsey and his associates. Os course the government will cosue in for a slice of the profits in the way of taxes. A farmer in Oklahoma, evidently discouraged by prospects of obtaining government farm relief, adopted his own measure the other day. He raised chickens as a side line and made his own feed, grinding meat scraps in with the grain. The farm was in- j tested with Jack rabbits so one day the farmer killed a hundred or more, skinned them and dried the meat aud then cut it up with the feed. Now he I makes his own feed at small cost, has 400 laying hens and an income of about SIOO a month from the eggs. The only trouble with that remedy is that we don't have the Jack rabbits around here. Pictures show I’resideut Coolidge wreathed in smiles on the eve of his departure from the White House. President Coolidge is happy that it's all over and evidently has no regrets or pangs of sorrow because he is retiring. What success marked his ad-. ministration will be recorded in his-1 tory, but one thing is sure the presidency agreed with Mr. Coolidge better than any chief executive who has occupied the high position in a gen-1 eratiou. He is in good health, line | spirits aud is going back to Northamp-1 ton, Mass., next Tuesday. Big Bill Thompson, mayor of Chicago, where they shoot them down in squads, won out in the city election Tuesday. Aldermen backed by the Thompson machine won in 33 precincts, giving them control of the city council. Councilman Haffa, convicted of violation ot the prohibition law and under a two-year penitentiary sentence, was beaten in the fortythird ward, so the residents of that district can at least hold up their heads. This is basketball tournament week and eight high school basketball teams will contest Friday aud Saturday for the sectional honors, with tfae result that the winners will represent the sectional in the regional meet at Fort Wayne. Next week, the Catholic high school Commodores go to Indianapolis and we don't know of any team in the Catholic league which' can prevent the Commodores from going to the national meet in Chicago. Among other advantages which Decatur has is a motorized fire department with three paid firemen on duty ait toe time. "In Konjola I found the medicine 1 always needed after i had been failing in health for a year. The constant strain of night working, lack of sleep and irregularity of meal time, soon made me rundown in general. I lacked energy, strength and ambition. I lost weight steadily and felt like my whole system was in a .sluggish, torpid condition—which it really was. However, I decided upon Konjola as the mediciene for me and it soon turned out to lie a blessing The boys in my orchestra now comment on the change in my appearance. Six bottles did the work —completely and surely. I have gained five pounds, have more strength and energy and feel like a different person. My appetite has increased ami 1 enjoy sound, refreshing sleep every night, it is really remarkable the way Konjola worked on my system —I have nothing but praise and gratitude lor this medicine." Konjola ijj sold in Decatur, Indiana. I at Smith, Yager and Falk drug store, and by all the best druggists in ail I towns throughout this entire section.
