A week from today you can call him President Herbert Hoover. It’s been a steady old winter and the coal man will at least show au increase in sales this year. Everyone would feel grateful if the weather man would send a warm ahower and thus clean things of the winter's grim. The radio and television will carry lhe complete account of the. Hoover inauguration ceremonies next Monday gnd those who can't afford a trip to the national capital tan get an ear full if they’ll tune in. Although the city election will not be held until May 7, candidates are already announcing and much interest is shown in the coming contests. Candidates for any of the city offices must file their declarations by April 7. Easter will soon be here and with it comes the season of spring flowers, new bonnets and finery for the women, possibly a bright necktie for dad and the period when everyone will want to get out doors and bask in the balmy freezes. Remember the Hoy Scouts this week by contributing to the Boy Scout fund. Solicitors will make the rounds and a. few dollars will make it possible to provide the boys with wholesome and supervised recreation and the building of better men for tomorrow. The state budget totals $55,000,000 for the next two years. Two years ago it was $48,000,000, an increase of $7,000,000. In the last election economy in government was one of the principle issues, but what can you do, say the legislators when the taxpayers want this and that? The public service commission of Indiana has granted the lower electric jates to the city of Decatur and beginning Marcli 1. patrons of the local plant will be given advantage of the savings. So much for good business management of a municipal plant, and the sincerity of the public officials charged with its operation. t Congress killed the $24,000,000 appropriation bill for the enforcement J)f the prohibition law Saturday. Why till this talk about strict enforcement and then not provide the funds for carrying on the work? There is much insincerity on the part of congress about the "noble experiment," but it seems that the people like to be kidded arid more than likely things will continue to go on as they have in the past. Next Saturday the sectional basketball tourneys open and Decatur will be host to the high school teams of Adams county. We’re glad of the opportunity to entertain the players and fans and suggest to those who need a little silting tonic that they attend the games, in recognition of the assigning of the tournament, to this city, the local merchants, cooperating with Hie Dally Democrat will issue a special tourney edition and any support given the venture will help make the welcome the more sincere and general. i.
, TODA VS CHUCKLE bos Angeles — (U.R) — Leonard Redman shot a paper wad which struck Mrs Lulu Peelo on the leg as she was boarding a' street car. A jury found Redman guilty of assault with a slingshot and Municipal Judge Sheldon sentenced him to 40 days in jail. It seems that President-elect Hoover has cold feet and will appoint Col. William Donovan to the cabinet, the tentative list of those who are supposed to land berths in the president's official family, not containing the name of the World war hero and able assistant attorney-general. Following the campaign there was much said about the ability of Col. Donovan, how he conducted the attorney-gen-eral's office and how Mr. Hoover wanted to bring about harmony and good feeling among the American people. It will be a text of Mr. Hoover’s nerve and statesmanship when he decides if the fighting colonel is to have a place in his cabinet. According to an announcement ! made by the American Automobile : Association, the owner of a motor car | in making his income tax return may i deduct from his gross income all sums 1 paid during the calendar year for | registration fees, driver's licenses, state personal property taxes and | municipal taxes. If he lives in a I state where there is a consumers' ' gasoline tax or license he may deduct . that. Interest on money borrowed for the purchase of a car may be de ducted, also all expenses incident to ; maintenance, including depreciation at the rate of 30 per cent, annually.! if the car is used wholly for business. 1 If used chiefly for business the deduction is proportionate. If a loss is sirs- ■ tained by damage to a passenger car I the amount is deductible unless cov ' ered by insurance. There has been no ' decision with reference to deducting fines paid for automobile law viola- i tions, but these are regarded by some 1 motorists as a part of the car’s maintenance atid should be deductable. Amounts paid for insurance on business cars, and finance charges, may be figured off, but not cars that have been traded in as part payment for new cars. Before congress Repealed that war tax on automobiles the bureau of internal revenue declined to permit a purchaser to deduct such a tax. holding that it was paid by the manufacturer; but he added it to the purchase price. This year there is no 1 such tax. —Indianapolis News. o__i 0 __i • BIG FEATURES * • OF RADIO • Monday’s Five Best Radio Features Copyright 1929. by UP Central Standard Time WJZ, network.
