YELLOW JACKETS LOSE TO TIGERS IN EXCITING CAME Curtismen Lead Most Os Contest, Onlv To Be Nosed Out 30-29 In a wild, rough and tumble baa-1 ketball game. Decatur high school | Yellow Jackets lost a heart-breaker to the Bluffton high school Tigers, at I the Community building in the Parlor City last night. 30-29. The game marked the close ot the season for both teams. Bluffton appeared to have profited by its long string of defeats during the season and arose to a new height in the last few minutes of the game. Tlte Tigers took advantage of every break and were always within striking distance of the Curtismen. Decatur led 37 minutes of the game ami Bluffton led for 3 minutes during different stages of the battle. The large auditorium in Bluffton was filled to capacity and more than 350 Decatur fans watched the Tigers creep slowly up on the Jackets and then finally. With less than a minute to play, sneak into a 1-point lead which they were able to hold until the end of the game. At the opening of the game, the Tigers made good on a free throw and held a single point lead for about a minute. The Jackets broke loose with about 10 minutes of their best basketball and, led by Carl Gerber. Decatur easily went into the lead, which was held during the entire first half. The half ended with the locals on the long end of a 14-7 score. The game all during the first hall had been spotted with good and bad basketball and at times was rough The officials, Ora Davis, of Fort Wayne, and Bill Smith, of Alexandria, failed to please either crowd and were constantly criticised by the fans. At the start of the second half, the Curtismen continued to hold their i lead and with about 15 minutes of j play, the score was 17-11 in favor of Decatur. The Tigers then began to I take advantage of the breaks and they crept up to tie the count at 17-j 17. For the second time in the game. Bluffton went, ahead at 19-18 am! then the Yellow Jackets tied the score and went into the lead 21-19. i The locals managed to hold on to a I slight lead and with two minutes to, go the score was 25-29 in favor of I Decatur. Three free throws and a field goal | in the next minute and a half gave Bluffton a 1-point advantage, and with 11 seconds to play Decatur had an opportunity to even the count from the free throw line, which was missed. The game ended shortly after the foul shot was missed and the final score was 30-29. Carl Gerber was the outstanding man of the game. He scored a total of 16 points for Decatur and was in practically every play of the game. Schnepp, Decatur floor guard,.played a great defensive game and helped get the ball off the back-guard on many occasions. Pyle, Bluffton floor guard. w%s best for the Tigers with a total cf 11 points. Stevens, Bluffton center, also played a great game and scored a total of 8 points. In the curtan-raiser, the Embryo Yellow (Jackets defeated the Tiger Cubs 21-18 and won the inter-county championship. It was the third defeat of the season for the Bluffton team at the hands of ecatur, and it was the deciding game for the second team championship of Adams and Wells counties. The Decatur team will receive a trophy awarded by the Daily Democrat and the Bluffton News. The cup will be awarded each year to the winner of the inter-county title. Feb 23 —(Special)—The Geneva Cardinals rallied in the last four minutes of play to defeat the Jes ferson high school basketball team here last night, in a fast and interesting game. 31-29. Jefferson led all the way until the last four minutes, being four or five points ahead m. st of the time. With four minutes to playtwo fouls were called on Stuber, Jefferson guard, and he was sent to the shower with four charged against him. Bollenbacher, who had been sick the past week replaced him, but was in a j weakened condition and the Cardinals I took advantage of this break in the game, to forge ahead. COMMODORES BEAT ANDREWS IN FAST GAME - . I Decatur Catholic High Quintet Drops Huntington County Five, 36-20 Decatur Catholic high school Commodores continued their winning I streak by defeating the fast Andrews I high school netters on tne icc.-.l hardi wood. 36-20. in air interesting game I last night. A large crowd attended the | scrap, which closed the home season I for the Laurent coached netters. Andrews went into an early lead when Bare, for ward, counted a semilong shot in the first minute of the game. Art Miller, Decatur forward, dribbled in for a fielder to tie the score. Botlr teams battled alrout even for the next few minutes and the lead changed hands several times With the t'ii st half more than half over Andrews was leading by 2 points. The Commodores started an offensive rally and were out in froift at the half way mark 19-12. Both teams were playing offensive 1 basketball and were working hard for I an advantage. The Commodores played a great brand of ball, and only one cr two occasions did they throw the ball away. In the second half, the Commodores continued their drive, and went into a 30-19 lead. At this point, Coach Laurent substituted and the game went went along on fairly even terms until the end. The final score was 36-20. Bill Gass and Petie Mylott were the chief scorers for Decatur with 10 and II paints, respectively, while Bare and Knight. Andrews forwards, were high pointeis for the losers with 11 and 8, respectively. The Commodores appeared in championship form and at times their offensive ability was the best of the season. The visitors bad conre to Decatur, supported by about 50 fans, confident of defeating the locals. Andrews had won 15 games and lost only three before last night and is given a good chance to win the Huntington county sectional tourney next week. No preliminary game was held, but I a vote was taken to select two cheer I leaders to accompany the Commodores ; to Indianapolis to the state Catholic I tourney. Miss Patsy Holthouse, daughter of Mi. and Mrs L. A. Holthouse of east of Decatur, and John Schurger were selected to act as tournament cheer leaders. Lineup and summary: Decatur FG. KIRKLANG WINS AT RUCKCREEK The Kirkland Kangaroos won tt well-earned victory over the Rockcreek Dodgers, of Wells county, on the latter's floor last night, 4>y a score of 25 to 28. This was the first Hine that the Kangaroos have been able to defeat Rockcreek al home. Rockcreek took an early lead of six points, but Kirkland rallied and led 16-14 at the end of the half. The Kangaroos hold the lead during the remainder of the game. Schlickman. Moyers and McKean played well for Kirkland, while Fishbaugh, who has been out ot the lineup the last two weeks, played best for Rockcreek. ■ In tl»o preliminary game, th'- Kirkland second team defoatod Rockcreek's reserves in an overtime period, 29-24. The Commodores will meet the St. Paul Trojans, of Marion, one of the fastest Independent basketball toams in the state. A preliminary will be scheduled for the evening and several , specialties also will make the program well-worth attending. There will be no set price for the game and a collection will be taken. Fans will be asked to make any contribution they desire. The program will start at 6:30 o'clock Thursday! night and will be in the form of al pep session. The Trojan team is under the direc- , tion of Father Simeon Schmitt, former Decatur resident, who is assistant pastor of the St. Paul church of I ' Marion. Tickets will be distributed for the game at any price the fans wish to I pay. All local net fans are asked to purchase a ticket for any price they desire and in doing so help defray’ the I expenses of the Commodores to the state tourney.
