FAILURE OF ONE FORCES OTHERS TO CLOSE DOORS (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) zatlon. The condition of the Wells County bank is due in a large measure to the lack of confidence upon the part of 1 citizens of the community as the re--1 suit of local experiences following the failure of the Studebaker bank here two years ago, Mr. Waugh said. ‘ The dosing of the bank followed ’ the depletion of the cash resources by steady withdrawals, the money being used Io purchase bonds in which the purchasers had great faith.” Mr. Waugh said in a statemint for his board of directors. “The bank could not force collections on loans fast enough to meet this condition. The directors decided I that tlie bank should be closed be’foie the deposits were seriously de- ' pleiad.” Mr. Waugh said it was the hope j 1 of the directors that the bank would . be aide to pay close to 100 cents on the. dollar to depositors. J Chartered in 1888 The Wells county bank was chartered in 1888. It is capitalized at $lO ',OOO. Its surplus is given as $60,000 and its deposits at $1,250,000. Tim officers of the banks are E. B. Williamson, president; JI. S. Morrow, vice-president; F. C. Waugh, vice-president, and R. N. Fitzpatrick, cashier. The officers with David Meyer, John H Painter, Frank Engeler, Samvel Hitchcock and John E. Sturgis compose the board of directors. 1 Representatives of the bank were 1 in Fort Wayne Tuesday, in an effort 1 to secure financial aid which would ’ make the continuation of the opera- * lion of the bank possible, but they 1 were unsuccessful. t The. exact condition of the bank : will be determined by an audit. j Trust Company Sold Fort Wayne, Feb. 13. —The Lincoln ; National Bank and Trust company interests of Fort Wayne yesterday completed negotiations for the pur- ' chase of the controling interest of the : capital stock of the Union Savings and Trust company of Bluffton, the only banking institution remaining in ! that, city following the closing of the i Wells County bank.
