Some s opposition was offered but of course j Hie voice of the people spoke louder. - The ground hoc knew his stuff, but j why worry? After all we don’t expect any thing but winter weather until the middle of March and most ( of us will be happy if we get a good ; break for spring then. Steady winter , is preferable to slush and sleet and , rain at this season. — l it is costing six billion dollars a year to police American cities, double that of ten years ago and yet crime has increased at about the same proportion. In other words the more police we have, the more crime. That dwtXseem right Juul they stay "figures, don't lie.” Republican politicians, republican newspapers and a good many other folks favor the repeal of the present primary laws or some amendments thereto. The only trouble is that the senators and representatives don't agree with tl.e.'i and they have the vote. Looks as though Lieut. Monson and his assistants have perfected a device which will make it possible for seamen trapped in submarines to escape death. The device is called a "lung " and by means of it a number of successful tests haVe been made recent- I ly. Further evidence of man's mas-1 tery of the seas. ...... — A number of Amishmeii appeared in legislature yesterday, asking that their children b<- exempt from the law which requires children to go to school to until sixteen years of age. They argue that means high school and high school means a distaste for the farm. That's new argument any way and may cause some thought. The state senate has passed the bill removing the speed limit for automobiles on country roads and fixing it at thirty miles an hour in the towns and cities. We speed aong. This new wriukle, copied from the Michigan laws may bn alright except for the reckless drivers and these seem to increase rather than diminish from year to year. If you want to go on a real spree go up to Chicago and get a job on the dry squad. Two dry agents up there testified the other day that they drank fifty-three highballs while securing evidence against a night club. Perhaps that was their idea of making it dry lor others but where do you suppose they pul it and what did they take for the headache the morning after? It looks as though Harry S. New lias done bis job as postmaster general In such manner that they can't get along with out him. He has inaugurated air mad service and other

The bill will go to the president this week and while not Just what he wanted, it is said he will sign it. Probably alright but it would certainly have looked a . little more efficient if we had built one occasionally and not had to make such an appropriation now. We don't need to resort to the old witchcraft days of horse whipping. The Indiana Taxpayers' Association is authority for the statement that of the first 349 bills introduced in both branches of the legislature, sixtyseven tend to bring a heavier tax burden on the public. The increased cost of government would come from salary increases, new courts, special levies, new departments, and so on. The demands are so numerous that the legislators are proposing to obtain the needed revenue through special levies, such as sales taxes. The Taxpayers Association takes the position that many of the needs are urgent and will have to be met, but in the end the legislature will do what the people demand aud if the taxpayers insist upon economy they will get it. —New Castle Courier. ——o — — NOTICE I am now operating my saw mill in Roland Grote woods. 31t3X Lewis Selking, Jr.
