A western newspaper used the headline "Deuces Wild" over a story of the fourth birth of twins in a family of the town. Not so bad. Hill Fisher. representative from Anderson wants Indiana to have a prize light law, probably on the theory that we might as well have it as send the money to New York, Chicago and Reno. There are a lot of folks who will have to secure their 1929 automobile license plates beiore this time next week. You can put < ft some things but you know taxes and death won't wait and this comes in the family of taxes. We may not be having as much real winter weather as usual this year but we aie certainly having more than the average amount of slippery streets ami walks and its not very comfortable either for the walkers or the autoists. We want you to renew your paper, I because without you we cannot publish the kind of a newspaper that a splendid county like this deserves. | If your subscription is due please be ■ as prompt as possilde so we can com- j plete plans for the year Senator Carl Gray is pushing a bill through the legislature making it a felony to sell or give liquor to a minor, with a penalty of from one to two years in prison. The bill passed the senate 27 to 22 and will probably become a law. The average per capita consumption of cigarettes for this country last year was 795. Seem big to you? Compared to Great Britain, we are quite temperate for there the per capita is 1,460. II is < tima'ed that 200.4)00,000 cigarettes are smoked in Great Britain each day A twenty-three-year-old boy was fleeted mayor of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, ami now they are trying to oust him because he is too liberal and because lie swears 100 frequently in council meetings. They should have perhaps been more careful in the election. Dr. Austin's theory that man just appeared iiddeniy on the earth is not quite so radical aa that of the evolutionist but just as silly. Os course lie appeared sudd'-uly but he surely came from some where or perhaps was created as a good many folks believe. Any way its not so Important where hi' came from us where he is going.
Detroit made an Intensive campaign against traffic fatalities last year ami that city which in 1927 led all others came through with flying colors showing a decrease of twenty per cent, while in the nation there was a two per cent increase. It can he done by proper police regulations and by talking carefulness all the while. We have received two or three anoyiuous articles this week but we cannot print these articles without I the signature of the writer. We will not publish your name if you so re-1 guest but we must, know the authority of such items before we use them. Before the 1929 session of the Indiana legislature adjourns there threatens an investigation of the teachers retirement fund. There are reports that much of the money has been unwisely invested and, to keep the state tax down, the state has not been keeping its contract. While under the law the teachers are to pay in threesevenths, as the books show now the teachers have paid in several hundred thousand dollars more than the state. —Bluffton Banner. Looked like olden times to see the boys leading thirty or forty head of draft horses through the streets to be shipped east and they were wonderful animals, said by the owner to be the best he had found in the state. A few years ago the horse business was a leading one here and the semi monthly sales brought hundreds of visitors in. In that day this county was recognized as the leading horse market between Pittsburgh and Chicago. There is still a market for good horses, Mr. Bailey says, the ones shipped from here yesterday being for the north timber country and the coal mining districts. Tlie old age pension bill, introduced by Senator Nejdl would provide for an income of not more than $25 a month to persons more than sixty-five years old upon petition signed by 200 or more citizens. The bill would require that residence must have been I in the same county for fifteen years. Wit 11 an average of fifty inmates at the county farm and giving the maxil mum pension, a plan of this kiud , would cost Henry county $15,000 a | year and then the old people would not be us well on as mey are now. it is difficult to see how the advocates of this legislation figure old and infirm people can live on $25 a month As it is now, there are many people sixty-live years and older who are not in want, but who would take advantage of the pension plan. It would be an easy way to get $25 additional each mouth. Where the money is to come from is another thing that is not certain. Os course it is costing Henry county around SIO,OOO a year tn operate the county farm, but the pension idea would be far more costly.—New Castle Courier.
