After that you gamble on paying a stiff flue. Soon we will know what brand of breakfast food, garters and other articles are worn by Mr. Hoover, just what hour lie winds the clock and whether or not he kicks the cat down ktairs when lie blows the light out. Following several casualties in Anderson that city lias put the lid down and conviction there for drunken drivers means six months in the penal farm, 8100 fine and disqualification for driving for a year. That .ought to stop it. Mr. Hoover likes privacy so well that he has become a recluse on an > island off Miami, Florida. It is next to impossible to get to him which •seems hardly fair for the army of office seekers who desire an opportunity to sell themselves. We never realize how much we use the court house clock until it takes a vacation. It lias been out of commission several days this week due to the recent sleet storm and a hundred times a day we glance up at the old dial and then have to hunt up our lugersol. The United States senate has voted an appropriation of $24,000,000 to the president for use in an attempt to enforce prohibition laws. In addition the sum of $250,000 was voted for investigation purposes. Thats a lot of money but this country doesn't stop because of the cost of a thing. Surely the jieople will expect some real results if they are to spend that amount. The Jim Stillmans are at it again, that Is they have decided upon a companiate separation. Jim is in Florida while Mrs. Jim is at the Stillman country home at Pleasantville, N. Y. After a while they will probably wish to try again and they won't have to bother getting married. It's a great life if you don't weaken. Professor Barnes of Smith college wants the ten commandments revised but so far hasn't succeeded in getting any such measure before the Indiana legislature. In the meantime the churches will continue to do business ami the old fashioned religion will be the only kind which can rule the world. We walked two blocks this morning and counled thirty-three cars with the old license plates on. That was just about half of the number parked on the streets we crossed. There Is hound to be a big rush for plates the next few days and the sooner you attend to this duty, the easier II will he and the less time you will be required to wait in line.

' .1 TODAY’S CHUCKLE I New Britain, Conn. —(UP)— CallI i d by an augiy husband who sal.l I his wife had come home durnk I Louis Harper tucked the woman in bed with a warning to to be quiet. A tenth of a cent on each cigarette doesn't seem like much and won't cause a single user of the little ' fags" to reform, but in a year It Is predicted it would mean two or three million dollars. A bill has been introduced in the lisgislature to provide such a tax, the money to be used to make up a $2,000,000 deficit in the school relief fund. The proposed new tariff bill reminds us very much of the one made during the Taft administration. You perhaps remember that after It became a law it was freely admitted that the revision had been upward. Thats what is proposed now und while there are some cases in which that is right and proper there are many where It is wrong. We do not regulate the tariff as we should for the best interests of all. The state tax hoard is proposing a change which would abolish special sessions of the board of review and make possible a rehearing of equalization orders only on petition by ten or more tax payers. In other words it is a movement to take more power away from the people and the good Lord knows that they have little enough to say now. However, sincethe people keep on re-electing them, we can’t blame the republican leaders for proceeding to do as they please about these matters. Adams county is the banner one again acco/durg to the delinquent tax lists now being published over the state. Here we have less than fifty while most of them have several hundred. Wells, Jay, Allen and Huntington each has a long list of delinquents, Wabash has over live hundred and others are still longer. It doesn't exactly indicate that times are «« good as some who give attention to the stock exchange sheets would have us think, but its about what is to be expected we presume. The Indianapolis Times is boosting tire proposal for a constitutional convention on the grounds that it is difficult to impeach a judge in Indiana, but there are likewise some good reasons why we should not "monkey’’ with the constitution. The greatest reason for carefulness is the fact that a lot of cranky notions would be produced and the lobby would be difficult to break down. We might get a worse one than we have now, which by the way has stood the test for seventy years rather satisfactorily. o Household Scrapbook By ROBERTA LEE Milk Tumblers Tumblers that have been used for milk should not be put into hot water until they have first been linsed in cold water. The heat dries the milk into the glass, giving it a cloudy appearance. Tangled Hair When the hair is very tangled, rub the scalp well with alcohol and the tangles will readily comb out. Pies To prevent the bottom crust of pies from absorbing the juice, brush the crust with flout or the white of an egg. 0 Gabby Hartnett To Wed Chicago, Jan. 24—(UP) Gabby Hartnett, slugging catcher of the (Chicago Cubs and Miss Martha Marshall, a pretty brunette, will be married here Monday.
