They threshed it out with “Billy,’ "1 don’t know,' he told them, “nobody knows but my father and mother and they're not here any more.' His opponents were satisfied with Adams' age qualifications and "Billy” started his legislative career. Finishing in the House of Representatives, he was elected a state Senator from his district and for years was a leader in tlie upper house. Democratic leaders several times appealed t-o him to run for Governor. "Youre our strongest man," they told Idm. "But I'd rather be a state Senator", he said. “I wouldn’t advise any young man to follow politics for a living." the Governor told his interviewer. “That's a big mistake.
