Later, following the family fortunes near Indiani apolis,, he worked at odd jobs and at the end of three years found himself possessed of 837. Then Meeker met Eliza Sumner land in 1851 they were married. They moved to lowa and they started west In the spring of 1852. At the Missouri river they became a part of a great immigrant train numbering 1600 wagons and includiig some 40.000 persons. Accident, disease and cholera claimed many. The death list was e«Hmated at nearly 5,000 btrfore the Journey was done. On Oct. 1, when the Meekers arrived at the village of Portland, Ore., where they spent the winter. In January 1853 they lejilt their first cabin where the city of Kalama now stands. They finally arrived at what now is tJi<* city of yeattle, and nettled there.
