Charter Members The Indiana League of Home Dallies. But the straw votes didn’t show Massachusetts, Itliol l Island or Utah leaning towards Smith. Governor Smith reduced the majority in Pennsylvania to a mere million or so. but it might as well have been ten for all the good that does. Decatur has more to offer and offers it. If the public will remember that it will be better for every one. Watch for the announcements of the live merchants of this community. It s kind of good to hear the jazz band back on the radio after ail the campaign talks. The past fortnight has been a bedlam to those who didn’t even care enough about the election to vote, we presume. The solid south is anything but that now. The democrats seem to have traded several of the states down there off for a couple in the east. Perhaps it will all work out for the best in the long run. A leading republican official in Fort Wayne celebrating the election in a wild automobile drive, lost control. His car turned over five times and his wife was so badly injured that an arm bad to be amputated. Study that. • We presume that the election of Mr. laelie carries with it the full endorsement of Governor Jackson s administration and the statute of limitations. At least that’s the way Ed will construe it no doubt. “Hoover receives victory with smiling serenity, " says a headline. Well, most of us would jump up and crack our heels together and yell a couple of times if we had been handed a $75,000 job with ail the honors thereto attached. November 11th is Armistice day, an event that deserves recognition. It is an occasion when exercises looking towards a concentration of a desire for peace in the world are most appropriate. President Coolidge has issued his proclamation urging the proper exercises in all schools and churches. London is happy over the election of .Mr. Hoover because he lived there fourteen years and understands that country as we'l as he does this. There is no doubt that the president-elect is qualified regarding foreign countries, but it may be hard to make all those ideas conform to those of this country. Frank Dailey made a wonderful race, running more than two thousand ahead of the national ticket and leading in praotieally every county in the state. H; tarrl.id Marion, Allen and others of the larger counties and under ordinary circumstances would have sailed into the governors office with but little trouble. Albert H. Vestal was re-elected to congress, largely because the three counties he carried. Randolph, Madison and Delaware have a larger republican majority than his opponent, Don C. Ward was able to roll up in Adams. Jay and Wells. Mr. Ward made a clean campaign and formed many friendships. Mr. Vesta.l will serve his seventh term in the house.
TODAY’S CHUCKLE Pensacola, Fla. Nov. 8 —-(U.R)The community thirst of Pensacola pnd Escambia county is quenched witii a bootlegger for every ten of Its population, according to Sheriff M. S. Penton.
The democratic county ticket went over big in the recent election and this Is one of the few bright spots for the democrats in u battle iu which about every thing went gally-west. The majorities ranging from 1,244 to 2,623 were the largest ever given in the county and we are sure that the officers-elect, appreciating that fact and desiring to serve will do so with credit to themselves and their party.
Now we will see whether the campaign promises will be kept. Too often they are forgotten as soon as election day passes. Mr. Hoover promises two thousand miles of waterways. a farm bureau with power to act and other things. Mr. Leslie promises to clean the state house and to give the people of the state an honest -to - goodness administration. Let's have it all. Is it wrong to ask the various temperance organizations and others who took such a part in the election on the grounds that the temperance laws would be broken down, whether they will continue the fight now and make as much effoit to see that Mr. Mellon and his assistants do some thing towards enforcement of the laws? That would certainly seCm to us to be the thing to do if the enthusiasts were really in earnest about it. Both Mr. Hoover and Governor Smith are happy that the campaign is over. The former will leave Palo Alto soon on a vacation during which he is expected to consider cabinet appointments and plan for his administration Mr. Smith has not definitely decided as to what he will do after his term as governor expires but needless to say he will find something and will be happy and successful. He has declared his intentions of retiring from politics, though promising
always to continue an interest in pulp lie affairs. Campaigning is one of the hardest jobs any one ever tackled and no one can vouch for that, we dare say these two citizens. By tlie way, what became of the much talked of farm revolt in Tues day's election? It must have got lost in the wild orgy of voting. Any way it was not to be found in any of the returns from the great agricultural sections of the middle west. Indiana, Illinois. Nebraska, Minnesota and the Dakotas all tried to outdo themselves iu the size of the Hoover majorities. Bed) Barry of the New York World had it right when he said that George Peek, who told him confidentially at Kansas City that I-owden would be Don’t put new tubes with old A complete new set of RCA Radiotrons at ■ least once a year is necessary to maintain fine radio reception. nominated, didn't know what it was all about. Os course the vote will lie taken rs a referendum and the farmer will continue to be out of luck so i far as any real aid from the national government is concerned for Mr. Hoover has openly declared that he doesn't believe in the principles of the proposed bills. Just think it over. o *««**«* X. * TWENTY YEARS AGO * * From ths Dally Democrat Fils * * Twenty Years Ago Totfsy • gt»*****«***«li Nov. 8, IMS, was Sunday. — —o 4i**¥********» * THE GREAT WAR * * 10 YEARS AGO • »♦¥¥¥¥¥¥♦**** American troops capture' Sedan.
