The Are Joss in Indiana on the Fourth seems to have been below average. Whether that was due to lu< k or precaution we don't know, but probably it Just happened It is being suggested that the republican national committee secure the services cf Governor Ed Jackson to sing "Onward Christian Soldiers," since it would he out of place to reader "The gang s all here," cause they ain't. Miss Amelia Earhart, first woman to fly across the Atlantic, came home yesterday and received a genuine New York ovation. It was not as general as was that given Lindy some fourteen months ago but it was enough to make her very happy over her achievement. According to the recent number of the Indiana Business Review there has been an average improvement of four and one half per cent in this state for the month of May. Thats encouraging and we hope true, but it can still stand some upward trend without most of those in business having any worries as to what they will do with their surplus. President Coolidge was fifty-six years of age yesterday and spent the time casting for trout. The president had a calledshrdluetasahrdlueasahrdy birthday cake and all the trimmin's. and called it a great day.—Bluffton Banner. i Thats a very unsual variety of cake ( even in Wisconsin, the home of Mr. j Volstead. • 1 Entering an important campaign it 1 will be well for all of us to remember that saying ugly things about candi 1 dates, spreading propaganda or losing 1 our heads is a thing to be shunned. Its alright to argue, its fair that you 1 may have your own opinions, you 1 have the right to discuss issues, but ' to stoop to slander is not good for ' you or your community. Some one seems to be wasting a lot 1 of money trying to save the life of Hickman, the California brute who murdered a little girl and threw her 1 body at the feet of her distracted father after accepting a ransom. His case will now be appealed to the ' Vnited States supreme court and if 1 that fails Governor Young will be 1 asked to commute the sentence. Just more delay with hopes something may happen. Mrs. Clem Shaver, wife of the chairman of the democratic national committee is leading a bolt of women from the party. She could at least have had the manners to have waited until after her husband had retired from his position which will be in a few days. Her statement means little if any thing for she has not been in sympathy with the democratic party for some time and evidently didn't care a hang whether she embarrassed her husband or not. Dr Hubert Work, chairman of the republican national committee stressed "the fuli dinner pail" to leaders who appeared before him yesterday. There are thousands of men out of . ■ .
TODAY’S CHUCKLE Dunkirk. Ind July 7-<UJ»— Never too young nowaday*. John Miller, local sub-deb, is only three years old but ehe already ba* a perman ’■ ent wave. , employment over the country and in many cities of the east and south, bread lines have been in use for , months. If they can make these ) hungry men and their families and ' friends believe the old slogan they J are some political wizards sure » enough. 1 Each vote cast in the recent primaries in this county cost sixty nine cents and .the November election will cost more. We slip into the election booths without thinking any thing i about the fact that some one must pay the expenses of an election hut of course there is a considerable overhead for officers, ballots, rent, meals, et cetera. The bills are paid by the county which means that eventually the people pay it, but it would be dull without elections in this country and we presume its worth much more than the cost. There is one thing about the candidacy of Governor Smith and that is that if he survives in politics, if he is elected president or if he continues leadership of the democratic party, he will be honest even to a fault. He will use no weasel words, will not Indulge in chicanery or double dealing, will stand for what he stands and wants the world to know it. That ought to be a relief in this country where campaigns have frequently been made on misrepresentation. His | candor should appeal to the voters of this country. It has been suggested that this city should be designated in seme manner so that airplane fliers can distinguish where they are. The name of the town “DECATUR" could be painted in laige letters on top of the buildings on the east side of Second street at small expense and we axe told that it would prove convenient to those who ride the air. It is suggested that such a step be considered by the Industrial Association and that any aid that can be given the project suggested by the Legion for an airport here will prove worth while. We are entering an age of flying as important as was the automobile period a couple of decades ago and those communities which keep step, will profit. , "At the present we are in the midst of apparent political confusion." said Charles Evans Hughes in a recent address. “It may seem that we ought to be able to get along in our political parties with less internal strife. I have come to believe that that is the law of nature; not simply the law of; political action, but it is a law of the universe. There was a time when; scientists in search for the ultimate and the undividable, thought that they had discovered it in the atom, as an indivisible unit. Now it is ap-' predated that the atom is a great | world in itself with electrons constantly clashing with each other. "As I has been well said, the progress of I the universe is from chaos into cos-I mos. We all know in our political | institutions, if these political electrons clash with each other for a 1 certain length of time, there will be j progress from what seems to be chaos into cosmos and we shall finally achieve a certain degree of political stability." *««*«*••»•**• • TWENTY YEARS AGO • ♦ ♦ ♦ From th* Dally Democrat FH* • ♦ Twenty Year* Ago Today • July 7 —Democratic National conveu- j tian opens in Denver.
