Might be interesting to know how they got a license, who married them and why? Most of us never heard of Greenly Island until a week ago but it has been the most talked of spot in the world the past week. Tex Rickard is pulling another fast one on the sports and near sports of the country. He iias matched Tom Heeney, a second rate fighter to meet Gene Tunney, world champion in NewYork City late in July and has started out to get a miliou and a half gate. I Tex usually does what he starts out' to do but we wonder if he is figuring that this is a campaign year, that money is not as easy to get as it has been in some seasons, that Heeney is uot Dempsey and that the whole thing looks rather more like a fair ground allow than a real championship bout. Some time ago Senator Borah asked for dollar subscriptions to make up the money received by the republican national committee from Harry Sinclair and to save them from disgrace. Bill Rogers sent him tire dollars and told him that ought to clean up five of them and even named the live. Now the senator has returned Bill’s five with the statement that he couldn’t raise the fund and Bill. The Witness 1 says that Gilliom has no right to at- i i tack the klan since he was elected to | office by their support and was on i the favorable slate of No. 53 in 1921 when he was a candidate for attorney general. They claim also that Earl Gentry, an alleged accomplice of Stephenson was on the pay roll from the office of Mr. Gilliom immediately | after he assumed office, giving the number and amount of checks paid !by the state auditor. MRS CLARA ANDERSON ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥*¥¥¥*¥¥¥ ¥ * * THE * * CAMPAIGN * * LOG * ¥ ¥ ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ (By United Press) President Coolidge in a letter to Francis y t esoot t, Massachusetts Republican chairman, requested that his name not be used iu connection with the Republican presidential nomination. He said such use was embarrassing to hiift. lowa Democrats decided on the unit rule for their 26 delegates at the Democratic national donvention which means the entire delegation, will vote for Al E. Smith. The Illinois Democratic convention pledges support of its 58 delegates to Sniit.li. --o- — F. Scott Mcßride, general superintendent of tiie Anti-Saloon Ixiague said that, if Smith received the Democratic presidential nomination he would receive no more than 200 of the 531 electoral /votes. William If. Hill, chairman of the New York State Hoover-for-President committee, said the New York state delegation would decide to pledge its supiairt to some candidate within 10 days and this decision would be favorable to Herbert Hoover. Senator Janies A. Reed iu a speech in New York City urged a return of tile Federal government to the original principles of individual liberty and individual responsibility. He attacked corruption in government. I'linois Republicans in convention at Springfield pledged the state's 61 delegates to Frank O. Lcwdcn. Charge of fraud were made by supporters of both Herbert Hoover and the late Frank B. Willis in the Ohio pre primary campaign. o_ HOW UNITED PRESS HANDLES THE NEWS HI. So that the news of each state shall be given the prominence it deserves in the United Press report leased wire circuits generally each state separately. Very few slates thus get exactly the same news report. Os course the outstanding international and national stories are basically the same, although they may vary in volume, while the state reports make up a big-tlWfere.nce of character. For instance, in Indiana, there may be developing a political story which monopolizes at least half of die entire leased wire report in Indiana that day. When such a story is running tiie relay editor at Chicago will select only the highest spots of the world , news to send to Indiana point that day , devoting all the rest of the wire space ’ to fast, accurate and detailed coverage of the big Indiana story which may be shaking the state politically. , Conversely, while this story may be of tremendous importance in Indiana, its news value dwindles as it crosses the state- line and only the out standing developments and the necessary interpretation is transmit- . led over the other wire circuits ) throughout the nation. Thus it is that when news is very , dull in any state, the newspapers nf that commonwealth are filled with t news from all points of the compass. . But whenever anything develops that grips an entire state and focuses the . attention of all the readers iu that slate upon it. the general news of the world except tot tiie most important developments is discarded so people • may know fully what is going on iu 3 their own backyards. 0 Hence, the day's work of a relay '■ editor in selecting a day's service y from the mass of material available '■ it. as varied and as strange as the I - news itself. Detroyat is one of the three soldiers from the aviation forces at Ix> Bourget who saved Lindbergh from the enthusiastic inob upon ills arrival nt the Paris air field last May. Detroyat wrapped Lindbergh in his leather coat and stole him away from the crowd, circling the mass of people and hiding Lindbergh away in a hangar. ( Now demobilized, the former sergeant is organizing his flight in exactly the same manner Lindbei'gh made ready for his ocean hop. He will certainly lie the first off from France, for his youthful enthusiasm knows no bounds. At 21 lie is fair haired, tall and handsome and in the air he is master of a plane. bevgh'a enjoyment. The greatest stunt of the day was an exhibition of flying with his motor stalled by Detroyat. He went through a aeries of stunts high up and then swept down to land within ten feet of a spot previously designated by Lindbergh. "And they call me a flying fool,” Lindbergh was said to have mused as he watched the young Frenchman. Now Detroyat has a metallic monbplane equipped with a Wright whirlwind motor. He has adopted Lindbergh as his hero even down to the plane. To enable him to take off more easily, he is buildfug a nJtal runway. Detroyat lias expressed a hope that when he lands in New York, the first person to meet him will be Lindbergh. o ■— ■— Rich Russian Territory Ukraine lias a territory of 174.610 square miles, with a population of 26. 001.802.
