DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 1928,
CATHOLICS PLAN EASTER SERVICES Services Commemorating Christ’s Resurrection Arranged For Sunday Emerging from the sorrow of Gcod Friday and the state of mourning, which the church and the faithful observed yesterday, commemorating the Passion and death of Jesus on the Cross, the St. Marys Catholic church will gloriously celebrate the joyful feast of Easter, celebrating Christ’s resurrection from the tomb, at all services tomorrow. “Christ, the Lord has risen” and the joy accompanying the fulfillment of His prophesies will be fittingly celebrated in the masses Sunday. The Easter high mass will be held at 5 o'clock. It will be a solemn high mass with the Rev. Joseph A. Hession, acting pastor, celebrant; the Rev. Father William Collins, deacon; the Rev. Father John Felthaus, sub-deacon. Holy Communion will be distributed dming this mass. The second mass will be held at 7:30 o'clock. Holy Communion will again be distributed during this mass and as has been the custom the entire congregation will receive Holy Communion on Easter. The third mass will be at 9:45 o’clock. It will be a high mass with sermon. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be held following this mass. Replacing the tomb under the side altar, in which lies an image of the crucified Jesus, will be a statue of the risen Christ, signifying that He has risen. Yesterday at the Good Friday services and during the Three Hours hundreds of the faithful knelt before the cross of Jesus, meditated on 'the passion and death of Jesus and prayed. The Three Hours were attended by approximately 1000 people yesterday. Holy Saturday Service In many parts of the service of Holy Saturday the word “night" is used showing that part of the office and mass was formerly said in the night, that is late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The term still kept in the litergy shown how the people watched all through the night in the church sa as to join with the angels chofus of Heaven with alleluias and hymns of triumph at the very moment of the anniversary of Christ's rising from the dead. The Holy Saturday Mass is therefore the early Easter Mass anticipated. On this day, all the lights and fires being put out, fire is struck anew from a flint and blessed. This new fire, coming as a spark from a rock of the earth as Christ came from the rockhewn tomb, j epresents Christ rising f: cm the dead to kindle in our hearts the new spiritual fire of His love; the old profane fires of our earthly possions being first extinguished in us by His victory over sin. It is a reminder to our obligation of walking in the

newness cf a spiritual heavenly life being now risen with Christ by His Grace. The large ornamented Paschal candle is uls oblessed on Holy Saturday. It too is an illustrious emblem of Christ rising from the dead, the light of the world. It announces the joy and glory of His resurrection. Five grains of incense are blessed and fixed in the paschal candle in the form of a cross. These symbolize His five precious wounds and the embalming of His body with spices. The triple candle arising from one stock is blessed. It signifies the Trinity of Persons in One God or the light of the Truine God shining to the world through Christ. The deacon sings “Lumen Cristi”, “The Light of Christ” as he lights each of the three candles of the rod. The fire used to light the paschal and the triple candles comes from the new fire. In all parish churches the baptismal font is blessed. Baptism is slemnly administered, if any be present to receive that Sacrament. Catechumens were formerly held until this time for baptism after completeing their instructions but now the genera practice is to baptize them immediately after they cmplet their instructing. After the litany and prophesies concerning nr Lord’s passion, death and resurrection are read the Mass of Christ's resurrection filled with alleluias inviting us to spiritual joy and praise is said.
