SHUMAKER AND GILLIOM MIX Indianapolis, Aprill 3.-(U.R)—Deny-ing tnat the ku klux klan had backed him politically in 1924, Attorney General Arthur L. Gilliom today struck l»ack at alleged statements made by E. S. Shumaker, superintendent of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, and in so doing he branded Shumaker's "charges" as "infernal falsehoods.” Shumaker, in a letter made public in South Bend, stated “I am informed that his (Gilliom's) nomination at the state convention was due to the influence of D. C. Stephenson, who became his champion.” "Emphatically, I have never been linked up with the ku klux klan,” GilHorn said. Shumaker's letter came as a surprise In view of the fact that it was generally thought that the klan had opposed Gillloni and Gilliom has given credence to this belief by his incessant fighting of the hooded order. The Shumaker letter, which was presented to the South Bend Ministerial association, was written to the Rev. William Brandon, Shumaker said. “1 did not know for what purpose the Itetter was to be used,” the dry leader continued, “but it was perfectly satisfactory with me for Mr. Brandon to present it to the Ministerial Association at South Bend. I don't really know. that Stephenson supported Gilliom but I have heard that such was the case and I believe it.” o Mrs. Boodhue Improing Northampton, Mass., April 3—(INS) —Mrs. Lemira Goodhue, mother of Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, was said to be showing some improvement at Dick-inson-Cooley Hospital today.
