ELWOOD RALLIES TO BEAT DECATUR Yellow Jackets Lead at Half, 16-15 But Are Defeated, 35 To 25 Elwood. Feb. 11.—(Special)—The Decatur high school Yellow Jackets threw a real scare into the hearts of Elwood baskepalT fans here last night and for a long time threatened to walk away with the liacon finally weakened and were on the short end of a 35-25 score in a hotly contested basketball game in the local gymnasium. A large crowd witnessed the first meeting of the two teams in the history of Hoosier basketball. The visitors started out strong and halMime found them leading ny a single point, 16-15. The lead switched several times during the game but as the second half wore on the visiting team appeared to weaken end the sharpshooting of Carter in the dosing minutes spelled defeat for D'-ahir. For the visitors the scoring was fairly evenly divided with Hill, forward. garnering 2 field goals and a quartet of free throws. Bell, Ana dell and Gerber each scored 5 points and Krick, guard, made one field goal. Coach Herb Curtis substituted three times in the last stanza. Ho sent J. Engle in for Bell at forward position and then withdrew Engle in favor of Stonebnrner. Bell later was retained to the game In an effort to stop the Elwood rally. Reynolds replaced Hill, at forward in the second half. also. The game was even most of the time and both teams had strong defenses. especially in the first halt. Decatur teams would have won three games last night if the contests had lasted only twenty minutes instead of forty. The Commodores were ahead of C C., t the half; the Yellow Jackets led 1 E w-ood at, tne ha f, and the Central eighth graders led Garrett at the rest period. But, alack, alas, when the second halt was over it was too bad. The Decatur hi ;h school second and third teams saved tlie evening from being a complete whitewashing, but they went and defeated Adams county teams. Decatur players and fans needn't feel so badly, however. The much abused Kokomo Wild Cats, the only team defeated by Marion up until the Giants crocked Huntington last night, arose and smote the mighty Logansport Loganberries last night, 41-35. Will wonders never cease. The battle between the Commodores and the Irish of C.C.If.S., Fort Wayne, played here last night, was just about all it was advertised. The game contained plenty of thrills and good basketball. I.' the Commodores meet the Irish in the state Catholic tournament, that ought (o be some ba'tle. -—' • ura I" I"'-Is from Elwood say that the v eliow Jackets put up a nice exhibition against the Elwood team. Tonight, the Curtismen play ut Crawfordsville, against a team that is rated even higher than Elwood. The locals ought to pick up some valuable experience on this week-end trip. Now that Mr. IHSAA has annuunced the schedules for the regional and state tournaments, the boys can begin to fill their columns with ifs. For the first time in several years, the winner of the Decatur sectional is not paired with the winner of the Fort Wayne sectional in the first round of the regional. The local win-
| ner meet., the winner of the Warsaw j sectional in the first game this year, ! while the winner nt Bluffton meets the winner ut Fort Wayuo in the second game. Syracuse has been doped ns the most probable winner of the Warsaw sectional, but the performance of the Warsaw Tigers in beating Columbia City last night, 26-22, shi uld lie a warning that the Tigers nre improving. Columbia City has boon going big recently. The schedules for the sectional tourneys will Im drawn and announcid on February 25. A contributor to the column, “Side Lights,’’ in the Conners ville News-Examiner, who signs himself, “The Gorillas,” says: “The Black Pirates of St. Gabriels high are picked as run-ners-up in the Indiana Cathcli; state tourney, which they hope to win and win a trip to Chicago.” No harm in doping. This game between the Commodores and Kirkland's Kangaroos, al | Kiikland tonight, ought to be worth I the price of admission. Monmouth I plays the Kirkland Seconds in the, prelim. Tlie Daily Democrat will get the returns from the Decatur-Crawfords-ville game and the KJrklnnd-Commo-(iores game tonight. Call 1000 or 1001 for tile results, but don't get too anxious and call before we have a l chance to get tlie scores. D. H. S. SECONDS BEAT JEFFERSON Jeffersonians Stage Great Fight But Lose Game, Score 40-35 Jefferson, though never ahead put up a game fight against the Decatur seconds on the local floor, Friday night. The seconds wen, 40-35. The local's started out. fast, and grabbed a 10-2 lead in the first few minutes of play. The Jeffersonians, however, rallied and in a short time wore only one point behind, the scor" being 19-18. By the end of the half, the score stood 21-18, with Decatur leading. In the second half, both teams ■Baited out strong, but Decatur seemed to have a slight edge on Jefferson, and held a five or six point lead until tlie last several minutes. Jefferson again spurted and soon pushed the score up to 33-34, still in Decatur's favor Each team got another goal a minute or two later making ’ the score. 35-36. These were Jefferson's lasfl points. Decatur made four more points, winning the game 10-35. “Curly” Reynolds, of Decatur, who made four field goals and seven free throws out of eight tries, and Walter, ol' Jefferscn, who snagged six field roais, were the outstanding players of the game. In the preliminary game, the Decatur third team defeated tlie Jefferson second team, 31-28. Three Big Ten Games On Tonight’s Schedule Chicago, Feb. 11—(INS)-The Pur-due-Michigan basketball game at Ann Arbor tonight looms as one of the most critical combats of the current championship season. If the wolverines are able to knock out a victory, they will have hurled the principal obstacle in the defense of their title Purdue now leads the parade with three games won and none lost. Two other Big Ten games are scheduled for tonight. lowa plays Indiana on the Hoosiers' court, and Minnesota journeys to Madison for a game with Wisconsin. The Badgers have chance to slide into first place, if tonight's games go that way. To make this come about, Purdue must lose to Michigan and the Badgers must beat Minnesota.
