A pipe organ is to be installed in the high school gym at Marion. Well, it will have to be a loud one if anybody can hear on a night like the ones when Bluffton plays the D. H. S., or Fort Wayne meets the Commodores. Some half baked gazook down in Miami, probably some relation to those fellows who sat on flag poles last summer, will attempt to row a twenty-two foot boat across the Atlantic ocean next summer. What a joke it will be on some shark if he attempts to swallow that. Three or four republican candidates already out have promised about everything in the way of reform and now the boys are guessing on what Fred Schortemeier can find to base his claims on. But he'll probably find something if he has to make it up special.
About the worst thing that ,can happen for this country would be the release of the Cincinnati king of bootleggers from the insane hospital as he boasts will happen in a few days, its such mushy sentiment that increases crime and makes every one lost faith in government. The Adams county grand jury did not indict Attorney-General Gilliom on liquor charges. ITie rule or except ion ?--Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. Just following tin- precedent set by the Marion iiounty grand jury. A coincident that is causing sonr conjecture just now as the Jackson tiial opens in indiana'pejis is the fact I hat Boyd Gurley, fighting editor of ihc Indianapolis Tinies has been sent by ills company on a trtip to Europe and Frank Prince, a livo wire detective reporter who dug lip many of
th,' [acts win li led to the indictment of Jackson and others has been discharged. It looks like the soft pedal. Before we can ’have an Old Home Week we must know ho*w we can finance it and thats what the committee is working on right now. We believe they can solve it, in f.lct we are sure they can if they are given the support they ought to ha le. Don't say "they arc going to give an old Home week," but tell cvcrylMMly "WE are going to do it.” Hammond is to get »a |7s,d®o postoffice building; Lima, $150,Wf».; East Chicago and Rushville, each and Port Wayne, SIOO,OOO. JJ|"catur gets nothing. WHY? Won't ' some one be kind enough to find out? The 'reasury and postoffice departnW'nts together will receive over two bitlion dollars to spend as- they sec fit. Pretty good for an administration'*o widely advertised as being economical. And how? 1 Babe Ruth was thirty-four years:' old yesterday, according to the family Bible. If it wasn't that the evidence is so conclusive we would doubt it, for it seems to us we can remember of him playing league ball that long. He has made a lot of money in his time but awoke a couple of years ago to the fact that he was silly to just thtjow his earnings away. Now
he boasts of (130,0dd of good securities and cash which is not so hard to believe when you learn ho is drawing down about (100,000 a year. They arc sending publicity out from Washington that the national conventions at Kansas City and Houston are to be practically dry, that is, that no effort will be spared to enforce the laws. Os course its a good while in advance and of course there will be plenty to drink if you wish to pay the price for the rotten stuff offered, unless these conventions arc considerably different than are most of the gatherings of large size in this conn try..
A new solution for the lack of prosperity in small agricultural communities is proposed by T. R. (’reston, president of the American Bankers’ Association. Ho suggests that industries locate in the smaller cities of farm regions. This, he says, would increase local markets for farm produce, increase public revenues and reduce taxes. This dovetails somewhat with Henry Ford's idea—that industry and agriculture ought to interlock, so That farm hands could spend the off months working in factories. It sounds reasonable enougfi. All that remains now is for some industrialist— and* why not our friend, Mr. Ford, for instance? —to give it a trial here in Adams county. The governor of the great state of Indiana or perhaps we should say of what used to be the "great state," today went on trial in the criminal court of Marion county on a charge |of conspiracy to bribe former govern 'nor Warren T. McCray. Co-defend-ants with him are R. J. Marsh, former law, partner of the governor an I George V. Coffin, well known republican and ward leader of Indianapolis. Every loop-hole seems to have been tiied to escape the trial but without avail and the governor must, face the
music. Mr. McCray is expected to lie oue of the important witnesses in the ease for he better than any other pel son in the world knows just wh: L happened when the three men were seeking the appointment of a favorite to be prosecutor. However, it is probable that several technicalities may be argued in hopes that the trial may be avoided. It is another black mark against Indiana's fair name. ——.- o Notice— Before ordering your tre‘ “ and shrubs for Spring planting, lie sure and get our pi ices. We can furnish anything ycu may want.
