Groundhog day and shadows Cold weather for six weeks according to the old timers. Here's hoping no shadows cross your path for a score of years or more. About every one seems to have complied with the law and secured their 1928 license plates. If you haven’t secured yours, you are taking a big chance for the orders have gono out from Indianapolis to arrest all offenders. I If the old ground hog didn’t see his shadow today, he is blind as a bat or else didn’t budge out of his hole. According to every old rule he will retire for a six weeks period during which we poor mortals are expected to shiver and shake. . A Chicago woman, thirty years old, underwent an operation two weeks ago to have her bow legs straightened. Gangrene set in and it became necessary to amputate both legs above the knees. Its sometimes foolish to try to keep up with dame fashion. — . —. Bluffton is having a Bunday pic-1 ture show fight, an ordinance having been proposed in the city council to prevent such entertainment. Thats a I matter for every community to settle , for itself and they usually do it iu I accordance with the desires of the majority. We congratulate the Adams County Witness upon another step in newspaper progress, the addition of a new and modern Cox-Duplex press and the appearance yesterday of the first publication from that new and up-to-the-minute machine. The Witness is now seven columns and nicely made up. Southern newspapers are saying all kinds of mean things about Senator Tom Heflin these days. One of them refers to him as the “hell-roaring * - gasser,” while another describing a function he recently attended said: “Up drove an empty taxi-cab and out stepped Heflin, the 212-pound mental midget." Its impossible to find any | newspaper that is speaking kindly of him, which is just about what such -a worm deserves. The Hoosier State Automobile Association, always looking out for the convenience of the motorist warns every one to he careful about! permitting your windshields to be ' come ice coated. They advise to pre-' vent it, alcohol, salt or glycerine as preventative* with a preference of glycerine. It forms a film to which lee, snow or water will not cling. If you have ever tried to drive when ice or sleet covers the windshield of tour car you know the agonies of such an experience. The banquet given at the Knights of Columbus ball this week at which prizes were awarded in the various farms clubs was a splendid event, one of the best given hero in several years and thoroughly enjoyed by farmers and business men alike. The program was interesting and entertaiping. Prof. Hall's address being most instructive. Such affairs arc always of benefit in many ways and
It would be fine If they could be held oftener. The three I’uskowski brothels came from Poland several years ago and settled in Gary. A short time ago one of them died. They gave him a big funeral. The other day the undertaker sued the two living brothers for his bill. Each said the other ! ought to pay it. Felix, it developed in the trial had charged each mourner three dollars tor hiif ride to the cemetery while Frank had sold them $l5O worth of hooch. Now there's a real question for a court to decide., which one owed the undertaker? William Edward Hickman, the fiend who murdered little Marian
Parker, was twenty years old yesterday. He spent the day in a cell with the probabilities of the next one bw * ing spent in eternity. His story should be a lesson to every young man. Think of it, twenty years old and his life a failure. No difference i. what happens to him he can never enjoy another moment. He had a ’ high school education, could have ’ made good honestly had he not de- ’ tided he could make money easier by ' being a bandit. It doesn’t pay any way you can figure it. ’ Jack Dempsey has quit the prize 1 ring because of the fact that his eyes are failing and his physicians advise : that another ten rounds might blind 1 him for good. Naturally Jack prefers his eyesight to a half million dollars which he could easily take 1 from another appearance. So thats that and Tex Rickard will have to hunt up some one else to match against Tunney, but don’t worry, be will find some one wi'ling to take the chances for a share of the big gate. - | Another pioneer, admired and respected by every one who knew him, Samut 1 Franks, has passed to his reward. Death came last evening after a short illness. For many years ho has faithfully and carefully and continuously watched and guarded th? business district of Decatur. He made the rounds for the last time about ten days ago. Uncle Samm ’. as he wks familiarly known, was born in this county about eighty years ago and spent his entire life here. He was of the old school, iiI dustrious, honest, courteous aud brave, true to his friends and kind to every -cue. He will be greatly missed. p **s*«#>«*?¥¥* * BIG FEATURES * * OF RADIO * «¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ it THURSDAY’S FIVE BEST RADIO FEATURES WJZ—-Hookup 7:30 Ampico Hour. | WJZ—Hookup 8:00 Maxwell Hour. ‘TOWN SILENCES : “INTERFERENCE” : TO AID RADIO r Experiment in Fairfield, 1 lowa, Being Watched With Interest k • ——. Bl International News Service Fairfield, lowa.—The experiment in 1 "silencing” all electric machines in • this city in order to do away with all possible radio interference is being watched with interest by mayors, membes of city councils and radio 1 listeners throughout the mlddlcwest. i The town's new ordinance, violation . of which is punshable by fine or imprisonment in the county jail, provides that all electric motors, gen- ' orators and similar machines must be grounded or "muzzled.” While the ordinance already is in operation, business houses are being given a reasonable time in which to comply with the law. Meet Few Objections Few objections to the new ruling have been made, according to members of the council and Mayor Harley Carter, who conceived the idea. All electrically driven machines, council numbers say, can be grounded or shielded so that they will not cause interference in the air. Only one electric machine in the city has been exempted from the general band. It is an X-ray machine ’ In the local hospital, but little inter- | ference is expected from it as it is I uot iu use often. The hours w.hen the provisions of the law must be observed are from 12 noon to midnight. Operation of household devices such as electric irons, percolators and vacuum sweepers, the council held, would not cause interference. Reception Improves Radio fans declare reception has ( been greatly benefited with the reduction of interference and are of the opinion that the law is on the books to stay. : That the new law is attracting a great deal of interest iu the middlewest is attested by the number of inquiries received daily from • city

QUALITY AT LOW COST I % A word from the publisher . ... about advertising THE products you see consistently advertised in this paper are worthy of your confidence. It takes two things to make a consistent advertiser. One is a strong conviction that he has a product that 5 will hold its place in public favor despite competition, : The other is actual proof of that. .. the increasing - popularity of his product. f if his product will not stand the test of comparison he would simply be thi’owing his advertising investment away. It the buying public rejects his product I it has been offered in advertising he has thrown his advertising investment away. ; Thats why the manufacturer who advertises his meichandise consistently is very sure of his quality ... and why you may be sure of it, too. Read the advertising here in your newspaper ... it will guide you to the buying of worthy merchandise. • Decatur Daily Democrat /
