Sunday, in honor of the sixteenth birthday anniversary of their daughter, Miss Catherine Hobble. Those present were Mr. and Mis. Edward Deitsch, Vernon Niblick, Elmer Sorg, Hairy, Vernon and Frank lin Hebble, Misses Lulu Ogg. Bernice Sorg, Iris and Margaret Hebble ami the honor guest. The afternoon was spent at the L. L. Neal home at Geneva. The Woman s Relief Corps will hold their annual installation of officers, Thursday afternoon, at 1:30 o’clock, at the Yeomen Hall. A pot-luck lunch ’ill be held in connection with the installation and all Relief Corps members, their families, and any guests whom they may care to invite, are urged to be present. Ben Hurs and made arrangements for a Lincoln Birthday Social to be given February 10, at the Yoemen Hall- Mrs. Wtn. Thoma , Mrs. Pamolia Wise and Mrs. Emma Burke, constitute a committee appointed to make the ararngements for the social. At the close of the meeting, a refret iiment committee comprised of Mrs, Rosa Venis and Miss Fern Hocnlsen served a dainty lunch. The Dorcas Class of the Evangelical Sunday school will meet Tuesday evening with Mrs. Gilbert A. Dusick at her home on Rugg street. The Tri Kappa Sorority will meet Tuesday, January 10, at eight o'clock, with Miss Helen Christen. The Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist, church will meet with Mrs. C. L. Walters, Friday afternoon, January 13, at 2:30 o’clock. Mrs. R. D. Myers will have charge ot the program and a good attendance is desired. The E. L. of C. E. of the Evangelical church will meet with Miss Mary Engle on Rugg street, at seven o'clock Tuesday evening. The Ladies Aid Society of the Christian church will meet Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with Mrs. Noah Mangold. There will be elecion of officers and a good attendance is desired. BEN HUR ISTR.CT MEETING The Ben Hurs will hold a district meeting, at the Yeomen Hall in this city. Friday night. Invitations have been issued to the members of the Fort Wayne, Bluffton. Kendallville. Garrett, Muncie and Huntington lodges, and a large delegation of vis'tors are anticipated. A program will bo rendered and refreshments will be served. Every Ben Hur in Decatur is expected to be in attendance. The Ladies Aid Society of the Reformed church will meet Wednesday January 18. instead of Wednesday of this week as planned. Members will phase n >le the change. MEETING OF ROYAL DAUGHTERS The Royal Daughters of the United Brethren Sunday school, met at the home of Wilma Foughty, Saturday afternoon, for a joint class meeting and to assist .Miss Wilma in celebrating her birthday anniversary. Several lovely birthday gifts were presented to the hostess. This was the first meeting of the class of which Mrs. Clarence Drake is teacher, and ■a short business session was held during which the class was organized and the following officers elected, president. Wilma Foughty; vice president, Clarice Jackson; secretary, Meivena Williams; treasurer. Mabie Hurst. Games were played during the afternoon and in a beau contest, Wi'.ma foughty was the successful piize winner. Late in the afternoon, efreshments were served by the bosfPSS. The Woman's Missionary Society ->f the Evangelical church will meet Thursday afternoon at two o'clock it the church. Every ftiember is requesed to either bring or send twen-ty-five cents toward the support of r Bible woman and branch expenses. The St. Marys Chorus Choir will meet in the Catholic school building. Tuesday evening, at 7:30 o'clock. The St. Marys Chorus Choir will sponsor a benefit motion picture show at thc Adams theatre, Thursday and Friday.. The title of the picture is "Quality Street,” featuring Marion Davies. TRAINGING SCHOOL TO OPEN TONIGHT (CONTINUED niOM PAGE ONE) in which the students work. Several have spoken of the inspiration received and all who have continued th'- work have been helped. If the importance of the school could only be impressed upon the minds of all the chuich workers, there would be a larger enrollment than in any semester previous, those in charge of the s< hool declare. The school is just as the name signifies, a training .school for the -community,. The leaders ami teachers arc glad and anxious to give their services to the largest number possible. — o M. E. Midgets Defeat Rinkey Dinks, 5-4 The Methodist Midgets defeated the Rinkey Dinks in a close basketball game, Saturday, sto 1. The Rinkey Dinks led at the end of the first half, 3-0 but the Midgets rallied to nose out a victory in the second period. The Midgets have won live straight games.

Dehoff admitted shooting Bausermann, but he stated that he fired the gun, not to kill Schoonover, but to scatter the crowd which was closing in on him Fined For Assault Se stated that he had no intention to kill anyone and the intent clause was stricken from the affidavit. Frank Conter, of this city will be arraigned tn mayor's court al 7 o'clock tonight on a charge of assault and battery. The charge is the result of a fight between Conter and Paul Whithouse, of thi t city. It is suid that the two men had lived together in a fiat above the Post Office for some time. Whithonse ordered Conter out and Conter refined to leave. A fight followed in which Whithouse* was injured. He was taken to the Adams County Memorial hospital where he is improving. Conter was arrested on the charge and will have a hearing tonight. Mrs. Snyder Placed Under Double Guard Sing Sing Prison, Ossining, N. Y„ — Jan. 9—(lNS)—Ruth Snyder was placed under double guard today for fear she would attempt to commit suicide in an effort to cheat the electric chair in which she is to die Thursday night. Matrons assigned to watch Mrs. Snyder were cautioned to keep her under the closest surveillance, and another guard was stationed to see that the matrons do not Yelax their vigilance for a moment. | These precautions were taken after authorities had uncovered a smuggling plot by means of which Mrs. Snyder was able to semi communications to the outside world. Henry Judd Gray, accomplice of Mrs. Snyder, has arranged to make his will this afternoon. He is fully resigned to his fate. Unlike Mrs. Snyder he has not the slightest hope that Governor Alfred E. Smith or any one else will intervene.

SEEKS PROBE OF HAMMOND AFFAIRS Crown Point, Ind., Jan. 9.—(INS) — Charging city officials of Hammond with widespread graft, intimidation and corruption. Henry Heckler, prominent real estate dealer cf Hammond and former member of the Lake county grand jury, this afternoon filed a petition before Judge Martin J. Smith here asking for a special prosecutor and special grand jury to investigate his charges. After a wordy clash with State's Attorney Oliver Starr, of Lake county. who was summoned to court by an assistant prosecutor, Hecklar agreed to withdraw his petition for appo’nt-mi-nt of a special prosecutor when Stlfrr declared his office was open to presentation of the charges. I In his original petition, Heckler charged that Prosecutor Starr had II ‘fused merely to present them before the last grand jury, of which Heckler was a member. 'I he charges made in the petition included political corruption is extent in Hammond; graft is being paid on a percentage basis on public contracts: contractora with lowest bids have been intimidated or bribed to withdraw in favor of individuals who pay graft to corrupt city officials. Oliver Starr, Lake county prosecuting attorney, is a former resident of Poneto, Wells county. Bluffton Man Commits Suicide Saturday Night Bluffton Jan. 9— (INS)— Charles I Stout, 46, of this city, ended his life I Saturday night by drinking carbolic acid. He was found unconscious about 6 o'clock Saturday night and was rushed to the Wells County hospital where! he died an hour later. IB health was said to have been the cause cf the suicide. Stout was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter.
