New Tort While you may remember this as one <>t the mildest winters you have seen, the records will show that New Year’s day was the coldest January first since 1871. Several Chicago newspapers are devoting much space just now to the radicals at Wisconsin, which is a rare display of nerve from a city which maintains Bill Thompson as mayor, j Perhaps some of the motors which did not "choose to ruu” the past few days were owned by the fellows who ran out of varnish during the holidays. Texas has selected a cotton queen but the only cotton she will wear will be In her cars If she's old fashioned. Her hose and dress and hanky and all her bib and ticker will be of silk or satin. We are sending a thousand marines to Nicaragua. If that small an army can take care of the situation, its hardly worth making such a fuss over and if that Isn't enough, it seems just ;■ a foolish to be teasing them. An economist who draws real money for writing wise sayings, declares that women will soon be drawing h$ Write salaries as men do. And when they , do we will see whether they divide as fairly as the men have for several i thousand years. It is announced from republican headquarters in Indianapolis that Clyde Walb is to lesign within two I weeks, if it can be dona without I vio'ating any promises, the. public would like to know why he is waiting another two weeks. l-’ort Wayne is claiming a pop.’.iation of over 115,000, which is high enough probably. Hy the way its only two years until the official census will be taken and its about time these towns which have been claiming more than they have begin to get the figures down to a point of I normalcy. Attorney General Gillium has filed a suit to enjoin the Ku Klux Klan from operating longer in Indiana, charging that the charter was received by false representations that it was a non profit organization. Its alright but the steps should have been taken just after Mr. Gilliom went Into office some three years ago, but nt that time the klan was 100 powerful for politicians to fool with. Th'- national public debt is new only about eighteen billion, having been reduced at the rate of a billion a year. Did it ever occur to you that we are trying to pay the war debt off too rapidly to be just fair to the present generation? The war was fought for all time to come, or so It was claimed at the time it was on. Why then should one generation be asked to pay the whole bill? —I X ■ MB——l I Superintendent Worthman is already planning to aid the Old Home Week committee by putting on a big Alumnae dinner during that week. Invitations will be sent to every graduate and it is needless,to say that this will be one of the happiest events of th'' week for many of our visitors. Thais the proper spirit too. if every organization would do n little it would make the week a bigger, busier and
bettor one and thats what we want ' it to be. About the only farmers who are satisfied with present conditions are ’ those engaged in dairying and they i perhaps have the right to feel better , than those who sneered at them when 1 they began. They have profited for I several years past and with butter I and cheese advancing in price, indi- ' cations arc that the future Is even , brighter. Get in the dairy business ' if you can for its the best insurance we know of for the farm to pay dividends. Governor Al Smith, of New York, 'in a forty-thousand word message to ' his legislature discussed some national as well as the state problems and in a manner that will make even his , bitterest enemies admire him. He declares "make the people the government," the soundest principal a republican government can have; he declares that enforcement of the eighteenth amendment is a sacred duty, discusses government ownership, farm relief and other matters of greatest Importance to the voters. His message is at least worthv the most careful consideration and study of every good citizen for we feel that there is a soundness in many of his i assertions that must be followed if we are to perpetuate our form of government. Waiter Myers has "tossed his cap I in the ring" and is now a full-fledged Democratic candidate for the United ! States senatorship as against Albert Stump. Both men, Stump and Myers. are vigotous campaigners and! the contest is likely to stir general interest. In his keynote Mr. Myers made his chief Issue corruption end misgovernment. Mr. Myers Is a nan of character and ability, and has the respect "ltd confidence of all who | know him. As candidate for mayor | of Indianapolis against Duvall he made a showing that was most cred- | itable, but he could not overcome the I forces that he denounced. It would have been a good thing had he been e'ected. It should be said for Mr. | Stump that he has shown himself to I he an effective campaigner. The con- i
